But here’s the thing about rights. They’re not actually supposed to be voted on. That’s why they’re called rights. ~Rachel Maddow August 2010

http://medievalscotland.org/problem/names/iain.shtmlEoin is a Gaelic form of John, adopted into Gaelic in early medieval Ireland from the Latin name Ioannes. It was carried to Scotland by Irish settlers and has remained in use in both Irish and Scottish Gaelic to the present day. Eoin was pronounced \OAÑ\ [1], with the same vowel as moan and with \Ñ\ as the Spanish ñ in señor or the French gn in montagne. The pronunciation evolved over time, but this pronunciation was used in both Irish and Scottish Gaelic past the end of the 17th century.
Iain is a modern Scottish Gaelic name, derived from Eoin but considered distinct from it in the same way that Jane and Joan are distinct in modern English. We have found no evidence that a name Iain existed before the 19th century. Ian is an English or Scots [2] spelling of Iain, coined in the 19th century according to our evidence. We find no evidence of any Scottish name pronounced \EE-@n\ until modern times. \@\ represents a schwa, the sound of the a in about.

Bearing in mind that that's how they used to pronounce "ion" in Finnish language, that would make an excellent scientific name despite the religious background.Ronja wrote:Not to forget:

This likely has to do with the orthography of Old Latin, which is why you see Iesu for Jesus. I forget the particulars so if someone can direct me to a cogent summary, many blessing be they upon your head.Horwood Beer-Master wrote:My name (Ian) is biblical in origin, being a Scottish form of John (by the way Scots, Ian = John? Re: Christian names, Atheist names ?
The English hard J is really unusual. In most European languages it's got an I or Y sound, so it's easy to understand how all the names derived from each other and a common source. Evan and Iwan are both in the family too.apophenia wrote:This likely has to do with the orthography of Old Latin, which is why you see Iesu for Jesus.
