Not noticeably.

Why are you so afraid of my opinion?
I'm not,
Then why don't you ask me for it?

I think you need to think about this. A long time.

Nah. Not more than a microsecond. If I want your opinion, I'll give it to you.

Okay, this one crossed the line. You deliberately and maliciously edited a quote in a manner that reverses what I actually said. This is bald-faced misrepresentation and it's a no-no here, so I'm reporting it.

Gaming the system, what every good little jackbooted thug predictably does when the question he dare not answer comes along, when the opinion that scares him shows up.

I'm going to the movies with my girl, it'll give the Mods a chance to hose down the server to keep it from melting down. Be back later to continue this witty repartee...if you're still around.

There is a FIFY in there.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=FIFY wrote: FIFY

acronym used in message boards, meaning "Fixed it for ya". Most often used in quoting another posters work and slightly changing it.
Poster 1 "I really enjoyed 'Brokeback Mountain!'"

Poster 2: "<Poster_1>I really enjoy gay sex with cowboys!</Poster_1> FIFY!
Since some people (like me) don't immediately recognize that, it can lead to unnecessary confusion. One of the mods can edit the post to look like:

If both parties agree.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

This is not acceptable. If someone is going to "edit" a quote by adding to or changing the actual words and context, then they must leave the original words intact and use the strikeout function along with an indication that the quote has been edited in sufficient detail to make it perfectly clear what the original statement was and how it has been changed. In this case, the "fixed fairy" does not reveal the context of what was changed and therefore attributed falsely something Schneibster wrote as something I wrote.

Personally, I'd opt for a rule making it a violation of the FUA to "edit" someone else's words AT ALL. It's lazy, cheap, unethical and leads to situations like this. If you have a comment to make, then use what wit you have and produce it yourself.

I believe this dispute should become it's own tech section thread with an eye towards clarifying the rules regarding changing what others have written.

Well come on, Seth, think about what you're saying.

First of all people have been "fixing" quotes in forums ever since quotes were an option.

Secondly, your desire not to be misquoted isn't going to trump everyone else's freedom of speech.

Are you seriously saying I shouldn't be allowed to type:

Code: Select all

[quote="Seth"][/quote]
- in my post?

What about this?:
non-existent user wrote:My name is also Seth, and I hate being misquoted so much that I'm going to go all authoritarian!
What if I don't type the quote tags correctly?

[quote="Seth]RAHH RAH RAAAAAHHG!!!![/quote]

Is that still a problem?

If you go down that route, where do you draw the line?

Am I not even allowed to interpret what you say in my own words? Discussions would never go anywhere.

If you're really worried about people believing misquotations then by all means point them out, but you can't just fucking ban them.
