That should make it more telling. It's not some evil atheist having a go at them, but a fed-up member of their own flock...klr wrote:... and also a practising Catholic. Teflon Bertie would never have cut loose like this.
If I'm reading things right here, the anger by catholic laity (and many priests as well) at the hierarchy is growing, and, in time, may reach a point of no return...

Yup - there'll be a schism and the New Irish Catholic Church will be born, with a pledge to go back to "traditional values".JimC wrote:That should make it more telling. The facts on the ground are that many naive men and women became priests, monks, and nuns believing they had a "divine calling", and also because it was one of the few job options available in Ireland in the 50s and 60s. A lot of these men and women did great things, and still do. (For example, I know of an elderly nun, recently retired, who deliberately moved into a flat in the most notoriously disreputable, drug riddled, and poverty stricken part of Ireland (a complex of flats called Ballymun - now completely redeveloped). Every day of her working life, she lived amongst and helped extremely vulnerable people. She did great work, out of a sense of social duty.
There are many other religious people who do this.
Putting aside the delusion of religion that went along with this, these people are good, and did and do a lot of good.
The Vatican is imposing 100% of the blame for Vatican inspired conspiracy on ALL the clergy, monks, and nuns of Ireland, in their attempt to distance the global revelations from the Vatican door.
There are many clergy, nuns, and monks in Ireland who actively engaged in a criminal conspiracy against the people and the state of Ireland, and most importantly, against the victims of abuse. These should be publicly identified through a judicial process. Noone is above the Civil Law, and prosecutions should follow.

Perhaps.
But this government has expressed a wish to significantly cut the number of schools that the Catholic Church "governs". 90% has been mentioned, but if they even achieve 20% it will be remarkable.

The Catholic church had an evil history that led to the banning of priest marriage. That was in the early days. Let them people become normal. Have some gay bishops marry.
The history

The purpose of the no marriage was to prevent collection of wealth and inheritance. The church wanted to hold on to wealth. The priests had to hold on to wealth and have babies on the side by whatever means.

etc etcThen, with the enlargement and enrichment of the Church, the saints almost disappeared and the sinners multiplied, Pope Liberius was sent into exile for refusing to sign an heretical formula. But when he heard that "the faithful" had set up an anti-Pope he "embraced the heretical perversity" (St. Jerome says), and returned to struggle for his flesh-pots.

Wow... what an excellent speech and a great step forward. I'll be very interested to see the Vatican's response too.

Well yeah, but this time that may result in them ostracising their Irish followers even further. Surely a good thing.Animavore wrote:The Vatican will give it's usual pre-written message they use for every occassion.
