I tried UU, again, a few months ago. The ritual felt contrived, even desperate for any meaning. I did get to hold hands with a pretty woman during the 'fellowship' thing, so there's that. Note to self - Pick your seat carefully if there's a next time.

That might be right. For the church annual "pledge" amount you might only get 12 pops with the prostitute. So it would be 4 times less, once a month, for company.Svartalf wrote:too expensive on the long run.Tero wrote:Well, there's always prostitutes.

You can get quite a few jumps if you tithe though.Tero wrote:That might be right. For the church annual "pledge" amount you might only get 12 pops with the prostitute. A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

You talk to God, you're religious. God talks to you, you're psychotic.

Re: Moving back to God
Dev, do you think that knowingly living a lie would leave you really unhappy, even if the ritual consoled you?
Re: Moving back to God
The trick would be to tell yourself that nobody can definitively prove it is a lie, and give all your attention to any consoling interpretations you can find. Keep thanking God for every bit of good, never dwell on the bad, and you might just start to convince yourself.Pappa wrote:Dev, do you think that knowingly living a lie would leave you really unhappy, even if the ritual consoled you?
Oh yes, stop talking to sceptics about faith issues. Talk to people more into it than you are, but not too much so, or you will find them laughable.

Rather than trying to return to religion you could:devogue wrote:I've realised lately that I now miss the ritual, spectacle, comfort, and warmth of religion. I don't know how, but in the years to come I'm going to try to rediscover blind faith.
Join a social / community group that holds regular meetings and perhaps organises public events. That could give you some degree of ritual and sense of belonging.
Regularly attend and follow large sporting or music events for spectacle and the feeling of being part of a big group.
Try volunteer work to feel that you are making a difference.
Get involved in political causes, become a party member / campaigner.
Join an amateur dramatics group.
Organise and attend RATZ meets!
Key things to focus on -
Collaborative activities with >10 people.
Something that interests you.
Something regular.
Personal face to face contact.

I say go for it. If it makes you happy why not? No one is gonna judge you for it.

God fearing church dramaz!!!

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

But, on the OP, what has been seen cannot be unseen...

I'm sure that somewhere, there are organised groups with rituals, spectacles and enfolding social comfort...
I know! Football clubs!

Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?

They have ritual sacrifice (the sacked manager, the dive, the verbal stoning of the ref), mass prayer, hymn singing and meet in 'cathedrals of sport'.JimC wrote:Damn good album, that...devogue wrote:I've realised lately that I now miss the ritual, spectacle, comfort, and warmth of religion. You could take up heroin. There's a huge amount of ritual there... especially if you inject.
