Responding to Gawdzilla, agreeing with Seraph...

I'm sure lots did, though the context is somewhat different...

Oz members here have not been the vociferous anti-US crowd in this debate (I believe you want some Canadian members for that... ;) )

However, we can express some disquiet at the extra-legal actions or the celebratory tone of some, while still understanding the American response...

I'm very interested in the socio/cultural aspects.

Ayaan's reference (in one of the other topical threads) to the "wanted, dead or alive" wild west style cliche is a good example of one US cultural aspect. It ties in with where I was prodding with my "Hollywood" comment, too.

This sounds like Hollywood stuff. :pop:
I've met a fair few SEALs. They are extremely dangerous, even by Zilla standards.

Everyone who' scolding the US for doing what any country has done when an enemy is taken down after a long struggle. The French gathered 'round to watch the aristocrats loose their heads. The people cheered when the Winter Palace fell. The War Illustrated shows celebrations all over the world after Germany and Japan surrendered.

But the war is not won!
The enemy won't break stride.

The aim of Al Qaeda as I understand it is to bankrupt the US.
They appear to have the advantage at the moment.
Every $ they spend in inflicting damage, the US counters with millions. That's some leverage.

I'm very glad he's dead.
But the tentacled monster that is Al Qaeda will regrow and recruit more angry young muslims.

:fp: I would have hoped we, as a civilization, would have grown up a bit since the french and russian revolutions. Also, cheering the end of a world war is quite a fuck of a lot different than cheering the assassination of one individual.

Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

This is all based on the assumption that people are "gloating" over his death rather than celebrating relief/closure/milestone/marker/hope.

Really? You think the human race has advanced past revenge in less than a century? Do you ever leave the house?
