I think it is idea whose time will come to be serious for a moment. We know precisely what critical resource depletion combined with climate change does to a civilization. The prospect of a new dark age where no recovery happens means? we may need to take the steering wheel away from the 'relgious' at all costs despite the prospect of a bad end. A few years of absolute decline may bring this into perspective.

I can live with doubt, and uncertainty, and not knowing. I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong. [...] I don’t feel frightened by not knowing things, by being lost in a mysterious universe without having any purpose, which is the way it really is, as far as I can tell, possibly. It doesn’t frighten me. - Richard Feynman

We need someone to take care of logistics. Boring stuff, but critical to success. Napoleon realised that long ago, when he said: "An army travels on its stomach", but even he failed when the chain of supply broke in Moscow. His army basically starved to death. It is vital that someone finds a reliable source of babies.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould
