Are humans apes?

Post by Lozzer » Mon Dec 27, 2010 2:55 pm

I'm pretty sure we are, least in terms of anatomical and genetic family; but my tutor, however, ardently believes we're not. She's not a creationist, but argues that while we share lineage, we're separate. I think she's confused modern apes with apes as an evolutionary branch.

We are apes - family Hominidae. Tell your teacher she's an ass (although she'll probably argue with the lineage there as well!)

Humans and apes evolved from a single forebearer species. We probably split off when two of our genes fused.

Yeah, a small group claimed they were a sign of an intelligent ape designer.

We parted DNA-ways with the chimps some 5 mln years ago, stlill share some 96% of the genes. If somebody is telling you we were made in god's image and they weren't, tell them something rude!

If she wants evidence that we are indeed apes, throw your feces into her face. That'll leave her with no doubt in her mind. You could also masturbate in front of her at every possible opportunity.
It's a piece of piss to be cowiz, but it's not cowiz to be a piece of piss. Or something like that.

The word "ape" has a rather imprecise meaning. Generally speaking, more and more biologists use the term to include humans. You'll hear the term "non-human apes" used more and more. We are primates and homonoids, so are most if not all apes.

Humans are classed taxonomically as follows:

Class -- Mammalia
Subclass -- Theria
Infraclass -- Eutheria
Order -- Primates
Suborder -- Anthropoidea
Infraorder -- Catarrhini
Superfamily -- Hominoidea
Family -- Hominidae
Genus -- Homo
Species -- sapiens

The family Hominidae is referred to as the 'Great Apes' and contains Gorillas, Orang Utans, Chimpanzees and Humans. The lesser apes contain such creatures as baboons and pawiz.
