The Greatst Film Icons

Post by Pappa » Mon Jun 21, 2010 9:57 am

I'm working on this little project I've set myself, and I need to pick four of the greatest film icons to use in it.

The criteria I'm using to select them:
  • They must be truly iconic characters and recognisable by everyone.
  • There must be at least one really good picture of the character.
  • They must represent a broad spread of characters across film history (not evenly spread, but certainly not all from recent times).
  • They must work well together as a group (visually).
Initially, my first thought was to use:
  • Charlie Chaplin - The Tramp
  • Audrey Hepburn - Holly Golightly (Breakfast at Tiffany's)
  • Clint Eastwood - The Man With no Name (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly).
  • Heath Ledger - The Joker (The Dark Knight)
But then, as I thought of more.... the list of deserving candidates just got longer and longer....
  • Chaplin
  • Hepburn
  • Eastwood
  • Ledger
  • Marlon Brando - The Godfather
  • Anthony Hopkins - Hannibal Lecter
  • Al Pacino - Scarface
  • Marylin Monroe
  • Darth Vader
  • R2D2
  • Tyler Durden - Fight Club
  • Jack Sparrow - Pirates of the Caribbean
  • James Bond
  • The Terminator
  • Travis Bickle - Taxi Driver
  • Rocky Balboa
  • Harry Potter
  • Mary Poppins
  • Alex Delarge - Clockworck Orange
  • RP McMurphy - One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
  • Withnail - Withnail and I
  • Dr. Emmet Brown - Back to the Future
  • The Dude
  • The Blues Brothers
  • Rutger Hauter - Blade Runner
  • The Wicked Witch of the West
Edit:

  • Humphrey Bogart - Casablanca
  • The Alien
  • The Predator
  • Colonel Kurtz - Apocalypse Now
  • Marlene Dietrich
  • James Dean - Rebel Without a Cause
  • Steve McQueen - The Great Escape
  • The Flashman
  • Vincent & Jules - Pulp Fiction
  • E.T.
  • Jaws
  • King Kong
  • Lassie
  • Sherlock Holmes
  • Frankenstein
  • Dracula
  • Maleficent - Sleeping Beauty
  • Hellraiser
  • Freddy Kruger
  • Jack Carter - Get Carter
  • Ursula Andrews
  • Dr. Strangelove
  • Bruce Lee
  • Austin Powers
  • The Man From Uncle
  • Han Solo
  • Tarzan
  • Spartacus
  • Lawrence of Arabia
  • Cary Grant - Rodger Thornhill
  • Marlon Brando - Stanley Kowalski
  • Clark Gable - Rhett Butler
How about the rest of you, who would your four be?

You're joking with Jack Sparrow? Right?

And you forgot The Alien, The Predator and Colonel Kurtz.

I am not quite sure what you are after: is it an actor/actress or a character?

I'm not thinking about it in terms of the best film/performance or whatever, but how iconic the character is.

Character.

With very few exceptions, it's all a bit US or anglocentric.
