When I was growing up, we had 'school pride' hammered into our psyches from middle school on up. Every sporting event or contest venue of any kind was plastered "We're #1"-type propaganda. Even then I wondered, 'Why are we #1? We don't have the best team or the smartest students. What makes us so different from the other guys from the other school who are also waving their "We're #1" banners?"

Those same people would go to church on Sundays and read from the Babble "Pride is a sin". Never made sense to me, and still doesn't, except perhaps as behavior of our unscrupulous keepers taking advantage of the gullible herd.

Now extrapolate from that 'school pride' context into a national context, then in context of being human, (or being alive, for that matter). Meh. I just walk away from that sort of institutionalized, herd-tending propaganda. Got no time for it.
