David Miliband anyone.........?

One I prefer to a Conservative coalition however!
It's a bit a of a mess either way - but it looks like Clegg has got them all by the balls. I hope he keeps squeezing.

Actually he/she would be our 76th unelected Prime Minister in a row. And a Lib/Lab pact would have 52% of the votes, 5 million more than the Conservatives.

As for a Tory/Lib coalition. It's a delusion, it would never be stable, they're apples and oranges, there would be constant in-fighting and an election within months.

Gordon Brown 'stepping down as Labour leader'

Gordon Brown has said he is stepping down as Labour Party leader.

Mr Brown, prime minister since 2007, said he wanted a successor to be in place by the time of the party's conference in September.

Mr Brown announced his intention to quit in a statement in Downing St in which he also said his party was to start formal talks with the Lib Dems.

From BBC:

The Conservatives are making a "final offer" to the Lib Dems, promising a referendum on bringing in a different voting system - known as AV - shadow chancellor George Osborne says. Labour had a referendum on AV in the their election manifesto.

Well if that's their final offer, the Lib Dems will probably get a better deal from Labour. Looking at this, Alternative Vote doesn't seem much better than FPTP, and it's nowhere near the Single Transferable Vote system that the Lib Dems want.

I agree AV is no better than FPTP really. Siding with Labour on the other hand is riskier as they would have no majority and will have to rely on other parties, they'd also be seen as proping up Labour and Brown. But I think it's a risk worth taking and will benefit both the Lib Dems and the people of Britain in the long run.

I can't help thinking whatever they come up with won't last. They are motivated by a desire for power and the desire to get something in place to appease the markets and confidence, but the reality is the parties were there for a reason - i.e. they had differing sets of values.

My take is anything they do will be very short lived. Another election soon may be the only way out.

As long as we get that referendum on PR before an election.

Part of me is chuckling at the sight of all these politicians and commentators in the UK trying to take in all these developments. This sort of thing is all a big culture shock to them. :naughty:

Seriously, I'm still not going to place any bets on the final outcome. :coffee:

Well, he/she would have been elected by the constituency, and then chosen by another vote in the party room, which is the Westminster system...
