Poll about the impact of the purge
Re: Poll about the impact of the purge
Short of buying a pin, I hadn't contributed a dime to the foundation anyway, and now there's zero chance I ever will. And while I won't go so far as to say I wouldn't buy any of his books, I no longer feel the least bit sorry about downloading a couple of them.
This whole thing reeks like something out of Nabokov.

Re: Poll about the impact of the purge
I would be surprised if Richard was fully aware of precisely what went on last night, and I also suspect that he's been led by Josh and the other techs to at least soome degree. I'll reserve judgement until I hear what he has to say himself.

Re: Poll about the impact of the purge
If he [Dawkins] was really still interested in our cause he would not have allowed Josh and co to dismantle a community of 85,000 members, at least 20,000 or so who put a great deal of time and effort into the fora.
I agree with Tony that we should wait before passing final judgment, and we will see what he has to say for himself at the conference. Right now, I can't help but think that RD, Josh and Andrew deserve the Templeton Prize for their efforts. One million bucks, perhaps they will commission Robert Byers to write biology text books for the next generation at school.

He might not know the impact of what happened, but he'll have known about it. Both he and the admin are completely removed from the process, which makes it very easy to make cowardly decisions in a cowardly way.hackenslash wrote:I would be surprised if Richard was fully aware of precisely what went on last night, and I also suspect that he's been led by Josh and the other techs to at least soome degree. You mean like when Josh woke up and realized he was a fucking cockroach? No, make that a "cuntroach". From the sniveling weasely way this was done it's obvious he doesn't have either a cock or balls.hackenslash wrote:I was thinking more like Kafka.CTC wrote:This whole thing reeks like something out of Nabokov.

I also want to wait to see what RD says, I am v v anticipating you guys report from the conference, wish I could be there.SevenOfNine wrote:If he [Dawkins] was really still interested in our cause he would not have allowed Josh and co to dismantle a community of 85,000 members, at least 20,000 or so who put a great deal of time and effort into the fora.

I'm so glad I decided to borrow his book from the library instead. It has only damaged my opinion slightly. On one had his delay in releasing a statement about the management of his organisation looks bad, but on the other hand, I don't suppose he is fully aware of how a site upgrade is best rolled out, and agreed willy nilly to whatever his team suggested to him. I think it'd be fair, before passing judgement, that someone in a previous administrator position, like Topsy or some other admin kicked out, contact Richard and calmly explain the situation.

The site is funded by voluntary donations. Pappa (our founder) has a link in his signature - there is also this thread.fuck you & fuck your god wrote:I also want to wait to see what RD says, I am v v anticipating you guys report from the conference, wish I could be there.SevenOfNine wrote:If he [Dawkins] was really still interested in our cause he would not have allowed Josh and co to dismantle a community of 85,000 members, at least 20,000 or so who put a great deal of time and effort into the fora.

A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

Re: Poll about the impact of the purge
This is a good point. In the corporate world, change - such as mergers - is often done by bean-counters without considering the emotional investments of people involved. Good companies prepare the people for the upcoming change well in advance, and incorporate their feedback as much as possible. This allows people to vent, and management to correct misperceptions BEFORE action is taken.Paul1 wrote:I'm so glad I decided to borrow his book from the library instead. Re: Poll about the impact of the purge
I am hoping right now that it is ignorance that has let us get to this state, but I don't base my views on Richard (it feels weird typing his name as that and not being on RDF *tear*) on how he handles, or ignores, his web presence.

Re: Poll about the impact of the purge
I doubt we'll ever hear a thing from RD, Josh or Andrew. I don't think they give a rat's ass about the ex-mods and members they've cut off, or the thousands of ON TOPIC, RELEVANT, THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED posts made by so many intelligent, rational, highly educated people. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you, I've met fucking lab rats with more gratitude then they've shown.
Yeah, maybe there were too many off topic posts, but really, how fucking on topic can you stay in Debunking Cretinism? After a rigorous carpet bombing by Cali, susu, Hack, Spearthrower and others there wasn't much else to say, other than to discuss the relevance of Cheesy Sticks.
A better approach would have been to put the offending forums into a different, members only category, with lots of warnings and cautions.
Oh well, things change, can't step into the same river twice, life goes on and all that.
