You know, when I was a believer if I had been discovered talking to nonbelievers in this manner, I would have been called before the elders and their wives for correction. Scary, scary proposition, you could find yourself being "retrained" in how to deal with unbelievers, shunned, or even disfellowshiped (thrown out of the church) if you didn't learn from the first two.

It's not an ad hominem argument, it's just an insult. Mixing up those terms makes people (in this case the people on this forum, us) look stupid, and with "stupid" I mean "like the Rational Response Squad".

I happen to agree with the opening post. Most atheists (at least the ones you hear about) are stupid. This includes professor Dawkins. I don't mean to say he's unintelligent. He's most certainly intelligent, but I think he and other atheist activists are misguided, and doing more harm then good.

Many atheist academics feel the need to venture outside of their field, and the results are mixed at best. Professor Dawkins mght be an excellent biologist, but he's a pretty poor philosopher. Evolutionary theory doesn't disprove the existence of gods, it just shows the invalidity of Paley's design argument. Dawkins' reasons for rejecting the concept of non-overlapping magisteria are nothing more then silly. It's sloppy thinking, and I don't want to be associated with it.

Meanwhile, the really stupid atheists like the RRS or New York City Atheists are trying to tell other atheists what they should think, how they should behave and what constitutes a good atheist. Brights are coming up with one ridiculous idea after another (debaptism, secular naming ceremonies, wtf?), atheist activists are spending money putting adds on busses and noone bothers to look at what's keeping religion in place.

I can understand why people think atheists are stupid. All of those you hear from are.

When you mention that you don't agree with Prof. Dawkins' arguments against NOMA, do you think NOMA has merit or just that the argument made by RD is flawed?

Ad hominem is not synomynous with insult, but in practice it usually turns out that way. The phrase now chiefly describes an argument based on the failings of an adversary rather than on the merits of the case. More often than not pointing out such failings amount to no more than saying something like "You are an idiot/moron/nazi" et cetera. "Therefore you are wrong." Another phrase for argumentum ad hominem is to play the man, not the ball.

I agree with you about Dawkins. He is a good scientist, an enthusiastic polemicist and a dreadfully bad philosoper.
