What are your thoughts on this experiment, though?

Feck's point, I think, is that there's nothing concrete to encourage restraint. The promise of a second marshmallow pales next to the reality of the one in front of them. My avatar girl expresses that, I think.Deep Sea Isopod wrote:Maybe she should put 2 marshmallows on the plate and lace one with poison, but don't tell the kid which one. One they can touch, see, smell. One that doesn't exist except as a promise from an adult.Feck wrote:Gawdzilla wrote:Feck's point, I think, is that there's nothing concrete to encourage restraint. Until they learn that's stupid, anyway.Deep Sea Isopod wrote:Exactly. Kids'll believe what adults tellthem.Gawdzilla wrote:One they can touch, see, smell. Yep the message of Christmas after all is that adults think lying about Santa to young children is funny .Yeah 2 marshmallows............later ....prove it ?Gawdzilla wrote:One they can touch, see, smell. This test wasn't done originally to test any "weakness" or anything. I think the original test was done to see if the kids managed the concept of getting a reward for an action. If the pre-frontal cortex (I think) of the brain is developed past a certain stage the kid will have the ability to grasp the concept of getting another one if it waits, and the threshhold for waiting will increase. I think this test has been replicated ad nauseum, and kids around a certain age will have the ability to wait when a bigger reward is at the other end.tattuchu wrote:This is really cute:

the woman presented them with a choice, to eat the one marshmallow now, or wait for two later, but didn't give the poor kids a chance to answerSo what the fuck were they supposed to do? If they ate the one marshmallow right away, it was seen as a sign of weakness and lack of self-control. Bollocks. If it were me running the experiment, I would praise those kids.
