I'd call it 'luck', as in good luck. 'Privilege' tends to have too negative a connotation. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines 'privilege' as a right or immunity granted as a peculiar benefit, advantage, which is not necessarily negative, but it also defines the word as "a prerogative especially such a right or immunity attached specifically to a position or an office", which is.

To me, 'privilege' has an aura of undeserved fortune, gained without effort...

Technically, that is what the accident of birth can give you. I, for one, am keenly aware of what advantages being born in an affluent democracy and a solidly middle class family has given me later in life.
I do agree that in this case 'privilege' is not the appropriate word to use. 'Luck' would be more appropriate, or our member from Yellowknife might have said to NineBerry something like "Fate has been kind to you".

Maybe. Or maybe you don't value family as highly as I do.
Re: "Alt-right" Still Parading Ignorance, Stupidity, Malice, Etc.
I value family over almost every other 'privilege', for what makes a difference in a kids life.
It's reasonable to disagree, of course, but in Canada, people who wouldn't think of being racist, are vigorously and openly classist. It's why so many put their kids into exclusive programs.

Which part of "I, for one, am keenly aware of what advantages being born in an affluent democracy and a solidly middle class family has given me later in life" do you have comprehension problems with? Or don't you understand what I mean with "'Privilege' tends to have too negative a connotation."?

That negative connotation sounds like a personal problem.
I still see most other 'privileges' as being worth a lot less than good family. See it anyway you like, but I'd have a tough time naming some characteristic I would rank higher in importance.

Having a family isn't "privilege". It's a thing that is shared between all classes in society.Cunt wrote:I value family over almost every other 'privilege', for what makes a difference in a kids life.

Nothing personal. It's in the Merriam Webster dictionary. "a prerogative especially such a right or immunity attached specifically to a position or an office". Also in the Cambridge dictionary: "an advantage that only one person or group of people has, usually because of their position or because they are rich". No surprises there, considering its etymology: Latin privilegium ‘bill or law affecting an individual’, from privus ‘private’ + lex, leg- ‘law’.

You think the poor or the disadvantaged in society don't value family? Stop speaking nonsense.
