What the country is is not the same as what the man is. The country is a republic, aka democracy, and the system is ostensibly capitalist. But, Bernie is an avowed Socialist. He has called himself that since the 70s, at least.

Of course he can. He probably won't be able to socialize the entire economy in one go, but he can certainly be a socialist.

A socialist poliitician in a democracy doesn't become a social democrat anymore than a socialist politician in a democracy turns the democracy into a social democracy. These are different concepts.

The US has a mixed economy, and if a communist was elected to office it would still be a mixed economy and the elected person would still be a communist. You can have a communist, or a fascist, leader elected who is unable to achieve anything and so the economic and political structure of the country remains capitalist or mixed and democratic.

You wouldn't get social democracy either. Whether we got that would depend not just on the President, but on the laws and policies he was able to implement. Electing a socialist, Communist, fascist, or nymphomaniac President doesn't turn the country into a social democracy, or anything else. But, if you're saying that that's where we'd end up, most likely, given the policies he'd propose, then you have a decent argument.
