Perhaps, but that doesn't make it equivalent to the opposite of altruism, either...MrJonno wrote:My vote says its not altruism

If people were voting for the good of others or the country then why bother with voting at all. Just have a committee of the good and wise to run the country permanent, in fact just have an enlightened dictator
Dictatorships can in theory be altruist ,democracy never can
Democracy is just a way of people who don't like each other avoiding being in a permanent state of war (well actually its still war just without the bodies)

Could it perhaps be a recognition of reciprocity? Do unto others...MrJonno wrote:If people were voting for the good of others or the country then why bother with voting at all.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould

I in no way recognise most the population as my equals, they may have equal rights but that doesn't make them equal to me. Some are brighter than me, a lot more are really really stupid. However I accept for society to function without continuous conflict everyone gets the vote.
I agree with Seth in looking down at the most of the human race but where I differ is 10000 stupid people are more than a match for 1 very bright MrJonno so we all have to make accommodation
