Would be the wrong implication from that survey. More likely that which is given free and is half assed has little value to those who assume they are entitled to it.

Literacy rates in the UK are declining generally, along with a few other social indicators.
That's nice.

It doesn't change the fact that increased religiosity in a country generally is associated with more societal ills.
The factTM.
I like facts but since you and I probably wont agree on a true definition of ''religiosity'' or "ills".... :coffee:

An international survey by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development has found standards of literacy and numeracy among school-leavers in England and Northern Ireland to be among the lowest in the developed world. Shockingly, older people leaving the workforce were better educated than those joining it. This may be the first time in recorded history that such a phenomenon has occurred, with the young worse educated than their parents.
You might want to try to read the article.
AGAIN?

You are the one who needs to read more carefully. Get your magnifying glass out and find my "claim".

PHEW! 8-)
Thats good because I didnt claim the the falling literacy rates were the result of religion/irreligion.

No, I think its sad.

You did imply that the falling literacy rates were the result of religion. Or is your observation that "Meanwhile....atheism is on the rise among young people in the UK right??" coming straight after "Literacy rates in the UK are declining generally, along with a few other social indicators." just a non sequitur?

Religiosity isn't a difficult concept. The more people report being religious, the more they report being serious about their religion, the higher the religiosity.

As for societal ills, things like homicides, teen suicide, poverty, STDs, and teen pregnancies

Falling literacy rates the result of religion?
Nope. Is atheism a religion?

If fewer kids in the UK recognize something as being a story from a particular book, declining literacy rates are probably a bigger factor than declining religiosity.

I didnt say... "the result of" atheism, nor would I, because its probably correlation rather than causation. Although the rising atheism and declining literacy might share a common cause.

Oops. I expressed it the wrong way around. Let me rephrase: You did imply that the the rise of atheism is the result of falling literacy rates. Or is your observation that "Meanwhile....atheism is on the rise among young people in the UK right??" coming straight after "Literacy rates in the UK are declining generally, along with a few other social indicators." just a non sequitur?
