My daughter was in scouts but never sold much cookies. In h.s. she was in Venture Scouts where boys and girls finally meet. She says they made cookies and ate them.

Americans seem to make pledges to the flag left right and centre. I doubt one has to to our Queen ever except on occasions such as this.

Not sure where you get that from. The only time I remember needing to was in elementary school and my mom told me I didn't have to since I was not comfortable pledging allegiance to a flag or country (I just put my hand on my heart and was quiet). So yeah, this has nothing to do with UK vs America (btw, if I have a child they would be a British citizen). I wouldn't be comfortable with my child pledging allegiance to any president, leader, or country, because I am not myself, even though I'll have to say the words one day to become a citizen (never had to in order to become a U.S. citizen since I was by birth).

Hell, I never pledge to the flag in 20 year in the Navy.

Me neither. If I was outside near a flagpole at either 8am or sunset I'd have to stand and salute while the anthem played over a loudspeaker. But that's just a show of respect; pledging allegiance is a bit different, and I haven't done that since elementary school.

I prefer the Oz Guides oath, far more reasonable. Pledging to serve the Queen is anachronistic wankery, as is the concept of royalty.
