Normal can explain the phenomenon. Go months without seeing sun and you get a little crazy. Go years without it and you insane. One of the worst things about solitary confinement, according to the victims, is the lack of direct sun light, no matter how pale.

Bunker funk?
Yes, but that is from people who have learned to fear enclosed spaces. Living inside such spaces for many people actually leads to a feeling of comfort from the security of walls.

On sunlight, that can be simulated. Researchers in Britain found that Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which makes people depressed in winter, can be alleviated with a few hours per day in a room with bluer daylight lamps.

For every human action, there is a rationalisation and a reason. Only sometimes do they coincide.

You don't see the sky much here in Britain.
Unless you count clouds. And anyway, what is the sky? Nuthin, lit up. So there's nothing to miss.

Now tv, that I would miss. The Mars Olympic Games would be fun. Especially the long jump and the high jump.

And the Mars Equestrian events should be entertaining.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Any text, including Wiki, on agoraphobia. Agoraphobia may present in the form of a fear of open spaces, and those people will gain comfort from getting into an enclosed space.

On Mars, there would be loads of totally new phobias.
Personally, I would probably develop a fear of leeks.

Bunker funk has nothing to do with agoraphobia. You're just fishing.

Well they could either polarize the viewports against these funky rays, have them shuttered so they only open on the 'darkside' of the station, or install wide spectrum lighting (metal halides, high pressure sodiums, or wide spectrum LEDs).

Or just give people the opportunity to go "outside" in a shirt sleeve environment when they wanted to. That's what's going to happen if we make a successful colony.

I never said the two went together. In fact they are opposites. You asked me to demonstrate that people could gain comfort from walls enclosing them.

To Pord

On protecting against cosmic rays. A lot of protection is needed in a space vehicle. If you were using water as a screen, you would need a thickness of three metres (10 feet). Tinting windows will not do it.

Of course, it could be done, but at the cost of adding a lot of mass.

C'mon now, you know agoraphobia is just a manifestation of claustrophobia.

No. Agoraphobia is its own syndrome, and a complex one. It manifests in lots of different ways. A fear of open spaces is one such way, but not the only one.

Really? I suppose NASA better get off their asses and invent some new polarizing technologies or some better fucking water in the next.. 60-70 years before any such undertaking becomes feasible.
