Graculus wrote:There's zero upside to any Skepchicks joining this forum. Sure the snark here would stop, but it's kinda too late to undo the damage. And if they joined they wouldn't be able to open a conversation about what happened, because any honest dialogue would be declared an attack and they would be banned. If any Skepchicks joined it would *prevent* any amelioration, because you wouldn't be able to talk about it.

And that assumes that the majority here are interested in moving on.

And before you 86 me for saying this, let me say that I've been thrown out of worse places. :-P
The snark wouldn't stop, but there would actually be someone who could provide a good opposing viewpoint to CES's threads.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

It's a piece of piss to be cowiz, but it's not cowiz to be a piece of piss. Or something like that.

The most you'll get here is a temporary suspension and even that doesn't happen all that often - and never for your opinion. :levi:

I bet I could find some suspension-worthy opinions... but then I would have a time out.

You must have been reading his stuff for longer than I. My first encounter with his output, and my reaction to it, took place in March 2009. If anything, my opinion of him has dropped since then. His pronouncement on dictionary atheists was yet another screeching diatribe from someone best described as a tabloid loudmouth and poseur.

Do you really think the parties in question are willing to listen to opposing viewpoints? I'm not getting that vibe.

I got rolleyed for asking for evidence for an unsupported assertion. Apparently the dominant narrative is not to be questioned.

If you've managed to find any evidence, I'm still checking that thread.

That's because we're not a bunch of vicious rape-enablers, we're just folks hanging out and having some fun. This is a not a difficult concept, but to hear the Squid Squad tell it there are a mountain of skulls under Pappa's throne. The very absurdity of that beggers discription.

Graculus, if you have a chance to check out some of the older Skepchick-related threads on this site, you'll find there are people taking their part on many occasions.

You've mentioned that sometimes you'll choose to cut bait on an argument when you realize the person you're arguing with won't change hir mind. I've been known to do the same. It's easier to stick it out if there are other people who can see where you're coming from.

Maybe you could stick around. Ayaan's right-- we don't ban people for their opinions here. I won't say there aren't downsides to that policy, but I think it's a worthwhile ideal.
