I don't think it's just atheists - most christians moved away from this too, I thought?
I know lots of people who have been, but same with me - I wasn't and I've never been to one. Just lucky, I guess!

At secondary school (your high school), I remember the mild shock in our class when it became known that one of our classmates had never been baptised, or wasn't baptised until he was 12, or something like that.

There were also dark rumours of ... Protestants at the school! :mob:

However, I should point out that religion wasn't really taken seriously. It was more a "cultural" thing. If it was an established school run by the Church, it might have been different, but it was a new state school, only a few years old.

Dunno, back when I had a gf and we thought it would hold, we were planning a church wedding and baptism of possible kids... for the sakke of our respective families, both old fashioned and strait laced.

Sure weren't we very backward altogether. There was even a moving statues craze in the mid 1980's, not to mention periodic outbreaks of other Marian madness, such as people having direct contact with the BVM herself. It was one way of getting your 15 minutes of fame I suppose.

The biggest problem with the Baptist ritual for adults is that when they push them underwater, for some damn reason they let them surface again. :cranky:

Sure it does! I got wetted, so did my brothers, so have several of their kids. It is an essential part of CofE practice.

I'm only guessing, but that sort of thing would probably have made you look like Damien from The Omen for some reason. Anything that wasn't quite standard-issue was viewed with deep suspicion. :what:

Actually, no. N°1 happened within hours of my birth, because it was in Church bound Québec and they were terrified that I might die without it, N°2 was some 8 or 10 months later, when the parents took me back to France to show me off to the family with full pomp.

Same here... I've even got my baptism certificate somewhere. Neither of my parents were religious, nor their parents, but they got me done because "that's what people do, right?".

Baptists don't do infant baptism but like a good dunking when they do do it (once the child can understand, about 12, I think).

Sounds perfectly innocent, but I can imagine the reaction: "You got baptised twice?" :o

Cue mutterings behind your back :whisper:

Thankfully, Ireland isn't like that any more. Now, most people would just have a laugh, assuming they took any notice at all.

I could make up an excuse like the first priest was drunk and gave me a completely unbearable name, so they got permission from the bishop to do it over again properly...
