My step mother has began circulating an Avon-like magazine so she can bring in a little extra income, it's called Wikanko or something like that. I opened the first few pages and it's full of 'Magnotheruputic' bracelets, belts, strips etc you name it. It has pages and pages devoted to the 'science' of Magnotherapy and the booklet actually claims to have accredited scientific justification for its claims. I thought it might just be a little banal bullshit, but the prices for these pseudo-scientific items are extortionate. The magazine goes under its 'eco-friendy' products, but it's really just trying to tell people useless bullshit. It also sells what's called an 'Ionic Toothbrush'. Apparently this "revolutionary'"toothbrush has a metal conductor in it. When the 'conductor' meets with light the brush is zapped with "negative energy/particles" which then "sterilise" and "fight plaque". It says you needn't use Tooth paste again.

I'm considering writing my step-mum a letter detailing the facts about the magazine's products. She needs to know that she's circulating bullshit which is potentially damaging to the health of her customers (brushing without paste? Over time I think that can amount to quite a degree of rot) . Can anyone find me the relevant scientific literature which refutes this bad science?

A revolution in oral hygiene
Imagine if your teeth felt so smooth that you might have just had a session at the dental hygienist. That’s how this new ionic toothbrush will leave your teeth every day and you don’t even need toothpaste to achieve it.

Studies show that titanium exposed to a light source has an excellent bactericidal capacity against Streptococcus mutans, a micro-organism found in the mouth that is particularly related to dental caries.(1) In Japan a clinical report on semiconductor titanium toothbrushes found that dental plaque removal was significant during the early phase of plaque formation and concluded that the brush was effective in the control of plaque.(2) Another Japanese study concluded that improvements in gingivitis and oral cleanliness can be expected through application of a toothbrush equipped with a titanium semiconductor.(3) A clinical trial carried out at a University College of Dentistry in Canada showed that the plaque removing ability, especially of the buccal surfaces of all teeth, was better than the control brush without the semiconductor.(4)

The bacterial population in the mouth has a direct impact on the body’s state of health, in similar way to the intestinal flora. Therefore maintaining clean teeth with an ionic toothbrush is central to a health-conscious lifestyle.

Replaceable brush head

If their trial was real, they would have sourced it properly and actually named the college - they would have been proud of it. The same with the Japanese studies. This is grade A pseudoscience bullshit - or, as it is often termed, Utter McKeith!!
