OK, who's gonna start the thread about sexism in gun culture?
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Does that mean you have multiple small penises?
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked

Yes, but some of us are already on those sites anyway, Gallstones. Remember also that not everyone who is a member of Atheism Plus actually identifies with it now. Quite a few have raised objections about the name, for example, myself included. I have also constantly criticised the group think of Skepchick and freethoughtblogs too, which is not exactly the accepted view should be taking, but I am still there, so that is something good I supppose. So I for one will not be toeing any party line. Treating my fellow debaters with respect I already do anyway. But if the mere expression of an opinion is unacceptable, then I will certainly be voicing my opposition to that as a general principle. Nonetheless, it is a more inclusive community than the two sister sites, that is for sure. That may be because it is only early days, however. But even so.Gallstones wrote:
I think that, based on the site name alone ie Atheism, that the traffic of new atheists and isolated atheists and questioning religious that richarddawkins.net used to get, will now find atheismplus. I think there is a very good likelihood that an appreciable building of membership will come from those people and they will like what the site says about itself. Whether they like how things are run, who can say. Being in need of like minded social interaction they very well might be willing to toe the atheismplus party line.
Sites with versions of rational or skeptic in their name aren't going to ping as readily with those people.
So, if those sites want to be another place for atheismplus members to go, like especially should those people become disillusioned with atheismplus, the other sites would need to be on the linked friend site list of atheismplus. Assuming atheismplus has such an arrangement.

Riiiiiggghht, Mr. Carrier. My refusal to join your club has nothing to do with you being a divisive, arrogant, sanctimonious prick who gives ultimatums; clearly, it must be because I support sexism, cruelty, and irrationality.

(Margaret Chase) Smith was sworn into the Senate on January 3, 1949. Less than a year in office, she gained national attention when she became the first member of Congress to condemn the anti-Communist witch hunt led by her fellow Republican Senator, Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin. Smith was initially impressed by McCarthy's accusations of Communists working in the State Department, but became disillusioned after McCarthy failed to provide any evidence to validate his charges. On June 1, 1950, she delivered a fifteen-minute speech on the Senate floor, known as the "Declaration of Conscience," in which she refused to name McCarthy directly but denounced "the reckless abandon in which unproved charges have been hurled from this side of the aisle." She said McCarthyism had "debased" the Senate to "the level of a forum of hate and character assassination." She defended every American's "right to criticize...right to hold unpopular beliefs...right to protest; the right of independent thought." While acknowledging her desire for Republicans' political success, she said, "I don't want to see the Republican Party ride to political victory on the four horseman of calumny -- fear, ignorance, bigotry, and smear." Six other moderate Senate Republicans signed onto her Declaration, including Wayne Morse of Oregon, George Aiken of Vermont, Edward Thye of Minnesota, Irving Ives of New York, Charles Tobey of New Hampshire, and Robert C. Hendrickson of New Jersey.

LOL -- I signed up for a yahoo account so I could post a few comments (polite ones) on Carrier's FtB blog page. I went to log in to that new Yahoo account today, and it had been deactivated. There are two reasons possible: (a) dormancy for 6 or more months, or (b) violation of terms of service.
It couldn't be (a) since it was a new account.
It had to be (b), and the only place I used that new yahoo account at all, so far, was to post on Richard Carrier's blog. He must have reported my email account as a violation of Yahoo terms of service, and got it automatically deactivated. Let that be a lesson to everyone dealing with these pieces of shit. This is personal to them. They will fuck with you, even if all you do is present reasoned, rational, calm and polite arguments. If you don't agree with them, they will fuck you up.
Richard Carrier -- you're a disgusting son-of-a-bitch. Keep it up. The world will find out what you and your scumbag friends, like PZ Myers and the idiot Skepchicks are all about. Many people know already. Those you've been snowing will find out soon enough.

So the atheism movement now has its own Puritans. I guess it was bound to happen eventually....but it's still surprising to witness.
