Lot of gun control advocates think the vast majority of US homicides are incidents like this. :fp:
Blasingame is at fault. He essentially challenged the other guy to a duel, which is illegal. He threatened to kill Tehnet, which is also a crime. When Tehnet did not show, Blasingame returned, armed, which is yet another felony (being armed while committing a crime), shot Tehnet and Tehnet lawfully defended himself.

If Tehnet had not been lawfully armed, he would likely be dead right now. So, far from being a "wild-west" shootout, it was a perfect example of a law-abiding citizen using his 2nd Amendment rights to lawfully defend himself against an aggressor armed with a shotgun.

Good for Mr. Tehnet, although I'm very disappointed that Blasingame survived the confrontation. It militates for Tehnet becoming a better shot.

Good points, Seth, assuming either of those guys' stories resemble the truth. If Blasingame showed up brandishing a shotgun, he's the stray loon that gun ownership should protect against. I don't see anything looney about Tehnet's overall behavior or response to Blasingame's actions, except perhaps, missing.

If I dwelt on 153 or 157 rue faubourg st honoré, I'd say that shooting the neighbor would be more than OK, it would be a service to the country.

That probably depends on the neighbor's dog in question. Try dealing with folks who train a pitbull for dogfighting.

In the story, there was only an accusation of dog-shooting. Who made the accusation? The trigger-happy, shotgun wielding loon. :eddy:

Read the story again. Nobody's dog was shot. But yes, I've shot a neighbor's dog before. Not for defecating on my property, but for chasing my cattle. In fact, I've done it three times, all perfectly legal destruction of an at-large dog harassing my livestock.

Right. One cannot claim "self-defense" if one invites the individual to a duel, goes and gets a shotgun and then returns and opens fire on the other person. Blasingame issued the challenge and made a threat to kill, which negates any claim of self defense. Tehnet refused the invitation (as he must) and did not pursue Blasingame. He probably should have called the police after Blasingame made the threat and challenged him to a shootout though. That would have put the final nail in Blasingame's coffin. Generally, in such situations, including self-defense shootouts, the first person to call the police to report it is given the benefit of the doubt by the police.

True, but if he'd called the police/sheriff in Mississippi before any shots were fired, they'd have just shrugged it off and called him a pussy. At least, that's the way it was when I lived there. :FBM:

Yeah, but the key is to get the report on tape at the dispatcher's office.

If you ever have to shoot someone, you call in and say "There has been a self-defense shooting at (give location)." That's all you say. Don't admit that YOU did the shooting, just get it on tape that the shooting was reported as a self-defense shooting. That way it doesn't incriminate you.

These days, the only reasonable chance of me getting shot (at) would be if the N. Koreans came swarming over the DMZ. Again.

And that's more likely than it's been in some time.

Still, you're wrong.
