There was an animated discussion raging among orthodox Jews some years ago whether the use of motion-activated light switches were an acceptable workaround concerning the prohibition of lighting a fire on the sabbath. I can't remember how or if that problem was ever resolved, but it made me reflect on similarly idiotic features that I had escaped from when I rejected my catholic upbringing.
