Ok, what I REALLY meant was names that will annoy fundy christians.

My ninety-year-old aunt was most put out when my niece was named Lucy.
It's a good atheist name twice over.

Darwin and Mendel would upset the creationists. I quite like the sound of Evo.
Evo Evans and Darwin Davies. They sound right.

Maybe it would have to be 'modenized'.

My son is named after his great grandfather.
I'm Margaret III and named after both grandmothers as an appeasment for being conceived out of wedlock.

From what I know of you from the onlines, I wouldn't have guessed Margaret. I'm not sure why.

I was picturing something like Dale-- you know, like Dale Evans. Name associations are funny.

Do you go by Margaret, or do you use a nickname? One of the things I love about your name is how many nicknames it has.

Maternal grandmother was Margaret, mother is Peggy, I'm Marjee.

Marjee suits my mental image. Not that that matters.

Nice, though.

The sprog is named for his great-grandfather and great-grandmother for first and middle, respectively. Actually, his first name shows up as a surname in my husband's ancestry, too.

J's liked the name for years-- had his heart set on it. And we both like that it's a name with a lot of history, but isn't biblical. Of course, it turns out it's the top celebrity baby name this year. :sigh:

Ah well. I still like it. And my name has been a crowd favorite since Old Testament days, and it still feels right-- still feels like my name.

I guess if we wanted to make sure the Sprog's name was unique we should have made something up. Like Fljuurp.

If you went down the road of using surnames of famous atheists, you could use Dawkins and Dennet.

You could end up with a Dawkins Dennet, and a Dennet Dawkins. It doesn't sound that odd.
I reckon that particle names would make good first names as well.

:ask: I would have called "Lucy" as religious name, because it reminds me of Saint Lucia.

When it comes down to it, an ordinary name doesn't become religious just because some saint or bible character happened to be called that, so I'm easy with most things.

In Afrikaner tradition, the first born son gets his name from the paternal grandfather. The second son gets his name from the maternal grandfather. Hence my name: "Andries". My grandfather's names were "Andries Gottlieb"; fortunately my parents decided to drop the second name. My brother's name is "Petrus". The English equivalents of "Andries" is "Andrew" and for "Petrus" Peter. Both were shortened to "Dries" (Drew) and "Peet" (Pete). My sister was the lucky one; her name is Babette.

I would really be reluctant to give kids a name connected to religion or non-religion :smoke:
