I mean like, you never see someone respectable like JRR Tolkien re-re-re-releasing new editions of the only thing they've ever done that anyone remembers and additional previously unreleased special features and off-cuts and bits * bobs that make no sense, let alone any difference to anyone who isn't some sort of Übernerd who's memorised every word and then debates the possible interpretations with their Übernerd friend for hours on end.

Tom Bombadil was a fucking annoying waste of 50+ pages that added nothing of value and the book would be better without him.
I read that chapter the first time. Now I just skip it.
Come to think of it, the book IS better without him!

TB made a point. That you can be immune to the evil of the ring, but that the immunity comes with the prices of not being able to do anything about the evil. The stop-over emphasized that the trip must be carried through to the end.

And yes, it was a bit boring after the first time, but then you knew what was stated/implied there so you could skim on later reading. Frankly, I found the Frodo/Sam branch of the later parts of the book to be boring, so I skipped them too.

Plus with almost everyone else loaded so heavily with either being (for the) Good or (for the) Bad, Tom and Goldberry are refreshingly outside that and oddballs/eccentrics to boot. I found that relaxing. A bit the same way that I found the coney & tatters episode and the talkative woman in the Houses of Healing welcome diversions.
