Everything that is art

That (the title) gives lots of room.

I have been immersing myself in biographies of artists.
I discovered this guy during my reading: John Peter Russell, Australian Impressionist.
This particular painting grabs me because of who the subject is.

The intensity in that face has to be genuine; I would expect it. Sadness too.

I presume it's Van Gough? Rather nice too, though I think Russell is a bit on the derivative side. One painting looks a bit like Van Gough and the next Klimpt or even Surat!

Turner - still my all time favourite artist - amongst many favourites:

I love a lot of American Abstract Expressionist art.

I love the sculptures of David Smith:

And his later Cube stuff.

The photography of Aaron Siskind has always been a favourite of mine:

From the painters, I particularly like Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still and Arshile Gorky.

Jackson Pollock's work really should be seen in person as the reproductions simply don't do them any justice at all justice. The work I seem to have found most emotional connection with when seen in a gallery was probably Kline's. It was almost haunting that I found them very powerful but couldn't pin any specific emotion on them, so I seemed to feel a continual flux of thoughts and feelings as my brain tried to tie down exactly how they were making me respond.

I also love European Modernism and Dada, but I'll save that for another post.

I really love Kandinsky's art. Especially the period where he had almost, but not quite, abandoned figurative images in his paintings, so that elements of them hint at, without actually showing, actual objects. Even in his ostensibly, purely abstract works, I still see objects buried deep in his canvasses - very often a horse and rider - I like that dreaminess of his. Plus, the colours of his works - especially in a collection of several - are overwhelming in person.

Did I mention that I just bought a book by Kandinsky?
Cost me a whole $0.01

His paintings are so happy. I should look at them more often, get some prints even.
I doubt I could ever emulate his happy style myself.

Horses and riders?
He was one of Der Blaue Reiter. :smoke:

He founded Der Blaue Reiter - it's named after one of his paintings. :tea:

Thank you everyone for posting to this thread.
It is one of my most favorite topics; and speaking for myself--I can go on and on..........I don't often find others in the course of my regular RL interactions who want to talk much about art.

Matisse.

I am currently reading a biography on Matisse. It is not the most well written, but still informative.
I don't quite "get" him but some of it is getting through.

I like this painting of his.

What interested me in Matisse are his cut paper collages.

I have never understood the appeal of Matisse. His paintings are kindergartenish. Critics praised him for "dispensing with" such things as depth, perspective and proportion - personally, I have never been convinced he knew how to use them in the first place - any evidence that he did is scant!

My favourite artist was Oliver Reed.

His greatest work, " Urine in Snow " sadly didn't survive, but it wasn't meant to, as it was performance art, but he was one of the greatest piss-artists of all time.

And that Kandinsky could have had a career in blanket design. What a waste !!!
