The only fault I can find with Steely Dan is that they are perhaps too smooth, too polished, too perfect. At times I long for something a bit more raw and spontaneous.

I agree with you about the polish - I had a huge argument with a random bloke in a pub once who said they were a jazz band. My position was that, although they use jazz chords and changes, the total lack of improvisation in their work means that they cannot be considered jazz. He seemed to think that any band that used a Major 7th(add 11) chord instead of a Major was jazz by definition.
Live though, they let their backing musicians show off their chops a lot more - they are very fucking ossum!
