Atheist Country Song!!!

Post by Robert_S » Thu Jun 23, 2011 8:12 am

By Robbie Fulks, a guy who actually has something of a career in country music.

Robbie Fulks wrote: A world filled with wonder, a cold, fathomless sky
A man's life so meager, he can but wonder why
He cries out to Heaven its truth to reveal
The answer: only silence, for God isn't real.

Go ask the starving millions under Stalin's cruel reign
Go ask the child with cancer who eases her pain
Then go to your churches, if that's how you feel...
But don't ask me to follow, for God isn't real.

He forms in his image a weak and foolish man
Speaks to him in symbols that few understand
For a life of devotion, the death blow he deals
We'd owe Him only hatred, but God isn't real.

Go tell the executioner of the power he can't defy
Go tell his shackled victim of the mercy on high...
Then go to your churches, go beg, pray, and kneel,
But don't ask me to follow, for God isn't real.

No, no matter how He should be, God isn't real.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
-Mr P

Ballsy for that genre, especially if he cares about being successful.

He doesn't - he lives in Chicago and openly descries Nashville with a song called "Fuck this Town."

I like this little ditty....

I hate it when atheists get all aggressive like that. :lay:

I have to admit, I needed the lyrics to figure out what he was singing. :fp:

:awesome:

It does on occasion annoy the hell out of me that a lot of music I listen (folk, country, blues, mostly early 20th century) is heavily littered with references to God.
Men! They're all beasts!
Yeah. But isn't it wonderful?

Doesn't really bother me, as long as the music's good. Why should the lyrics have to make sense? It's not just god that tries to make an appearance, a lot of woo gets in songs I like too, but it doesn't spoil them for me.

Any chance of posting the lyrics on that? There's a bit around the 3:20 mark where my tin ears can't quite make out the words.

Yeah, it's not often, just occasionally that it grates, but I can overlook it as 'everyone was religious then' and given other songs lyrics they can't have been that God fearing.. :hehe:

I've got a friend, I know his name
He's with me through the night and he's with me in the day
Though I don't love other guys cuz that just ain't right
When I think about him I get a little high

I know his name, I know his name
When I think about him I get high
I know I don't love other guys cuz he says that just ain't right
I love him more than I do my wife

Well I love my friend, his daddy's just the same
He has all the answers that I need to explain
I don't believe no legends, I don't believe no myths
But my friend's pa's so awesome that I just can't resist

He's just the same, he's just the same
So awesome that I just can't resist
I don't believe no legends, I don't believe no myths
But I love them more than I love my kids

I know deep in my heart that he'll never leave
I know deep in my heart that I believe
I know deep in my heart he's always on my mind
I know I know his name and he knows mine

Some say I'm crazy, and that he don't exist
But when I kneel before him, he fills me with his bliss
and sure though he's invisible I see him in my head
I'll live with him forever, as soon as I am dead

He don't exist, he don't exist
I'm gonna live forever when I'm dead
and sure though he's invisible I see him in my head
and I love him more than I do my friends

I love him more than I do my life
All my life, all my life
Oh lord I've given to him all my life
They say I'm crazy, and that it's all a lie
but I know where they're going when they die

It's all a lie, it's all a lie
but i know where they're going after this
cuz when i kneel before him he fills me with his bliss
And I love him more than i love my kids.
