I've been getting into American music. Persichetti, wind bag, I mean wind band guy, and Dougherty:

it's a bit cheezy, but not the worn out evergreens of Boston Pops.

That's one of my faves. Although ever since I've heard it used in a German costume-drama porn while in an Amsterdam hotel whacked off magic mushrooms purportedly from the Andes I haven't been able to view the piece the same.

I have many major beefs with classical music.
Firstly, it should never be supported by taxes. Only if there is a guaranteed return to the taxpayer, which can be proved, not just claimed.

Second, I totally disagree that fifty violins sound better than one. I would far rather listen to one top artist, than fifty also-rans.

Also the endless variations are a con. Can't people see that a couple of tunes are being padded out incessantly?

Having said that, there is some good stuff. But that doesn't make the ordinary stuff any better. And there is shitloads of rubbish, in the classical repertoire,
It’s worshipped because it’s in the same format as the good stuff.

Just like the Saints are worshipped because they have a dubious connection to the one and only.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

If you want to sample stuff but not buy, the TSO site, Toronto Symphony has a setup for free streaming of Naxos and few other brands. It sets a pop up window like this:

If its modern its usually rock for me. The singer of death metal may
sound like Cookie Monster in hell, but the band may still have some
good licks. Something I can remember. It is the same with both new and
old: if I cant play a piece of it in my head afterward, its not worth
the trouble. Nirvana, Zappa or Mozart, same rule for all.

I do have some Steve Reich and Adams, but mostly none of this John Cage stuff:
