I heard the British version was far superior to the weak American version.Clinton Huxley wrote:Geoff wrote:Indeed so. - About me: I am an intellectual, a member of the Outer Party, and I live in the ruins of London. I grew up in the post-Second World War UK, during the revolution and the civil war after which the Party assumed power. During the civil war, Ingsoc placed me in an orphanage for training and subsequent employment as a civil servant. I maintain a squalid existence, living in a one-room apartment, eating a subsistence diet of black bread and synthetic meals washed down with Victory-brand gin. I keep a journal of negative thoughts and opinions about the Party and Big Brother, which, if discovered by the Thought Police, will warrant death, so don't tell on me. I am fortunate, because the apartment I live in has an alcove, beside the telescreen, where it cannot see me, and so my thoughts remain private.

There is a British version?
To the future or to the past, to a time when thought is free, when men are different from one another and do not live alone — to a time when truth exists and what is done cannot be undone: From the age of uniformity, from the age of solitude, from the age of Big Brother, from the age of doublethink — greetings!

Coito is trying to be humourous, but of course Merkin humour is famous for being less funny than British...Orwellian wrote:There is a British version?

Leaving John Travolta out probably angered folks.

Odd that you like the movie, there being not a single British hero in the entire movie....Clinton Huxley wrote:Geoff wrote:Indeed so. The hero: Rick Blaine, American.
Secondary hero: Viktor Laszlo, Czech resistance fighter
The villains: The Germans
The wishy washy sidekick of the hero: Frenchman, Louis Renault
Damsel in distress: Ilsa Lund, Norwegian hottie
Bartender -- Russian
Owner of the Blue Parrott - Italian (Senor Ferrari)
....not a single Englishman to be found in the whole movie, despite it being set in WW2. That may be why it is considered among the best movies of all time.

Re: If you could remake the movie Casablanca today...
Lately, very few movies have thrilled me. The new movies over the last 10 years have generally been bad, or formulaic. The occasional comedy knocks it out of the park, like the Hangover. Then they ruin it with sequels.JimC wrote:I think there's something wrong with me.

Anything with special effects typically suck these days. They don't get that special effects can't replace dialogue and plot. That's why a 50 year old Twilight Zone episode is still timeless and enjoyable despite its hokey special effects, but recent "blockbusters" tend to be trite and formulaic.
