The Tudors - Good Series? Sucks?

Post by Coito ergo sum » Mon Jun 13, 2011 7:54 pm

I just started watching this because I found it on BBC America by chance. I like it, but like the Rome series that HBO had, the historical inaccuracies bug the fuck out of me.

I don't mind them changing things per se, but what bugs me is that they seem to change things in a way that either makes them LESS interesting than the real history, or has no real effect of increasing the entertainment value.

I find the idea of a series on Henry VIII to be an awesome topic, and plenty of characters to build on. But, why do they have to fuck up basic stuff?

Like - why did they have Wolsey committing suicide? Why do they have Henry with one sister instead of two? Why does Princess Margaret go to Portugal to marry the Portuguese king, when in real life she went to Scotland and married James IV? And, the series has him divorcing Catharine of Aragon as a young man. In reality he married her when he was like 18 or whatever, and they were married for like 25 years or whatever give or take. And, Henry used to bang all sorts of chicks, but the series has him banging chicks nobody ever accused him of banging....

Anyway - I like the series, but I always wonder why they take perfectly good and juicy history and change the story when it has no evident benefit to the story at all?

Definitely not accurate, but I enjoyed every series and was sad when it finished. It helps that Jonathan Rhys Meyers is very easy on the eye, as is Natalie Dormer

I did feel a little guilty for laughing at Joss Stone, getting cast as Anne of Cleves :hehe:
Men! They're all beasts!
Yeah. But isn't it wonderful?

4 series, all the wives. He gets fat and old and gouty, his voice gets all croaky. Still kinda attractive though :shifty: The ending of the last episode was a little gay.

They should have gone right into the successors - Edward and then the whole Mary Tudor beheading Jane and all that. All the bloody history when Mary was Queen would have been cool, and then Elizabeth could be featured and her reign was really interesting.

I was really disappointed when the show "Rome" ended on HBO a few years ago. They were just getting good, although there were obvious glaring historical fabrication and modifications that piss one off.... I think they sort of hurried to Caesar's death and then to Antony and Cleopatra's demises - they could have extended it more, and then after Augustus becomes emperor, they could have really gotten into some cool stuff. Or, they could have skipped to the end of Augustus's reign and gotten into all the asshole and crazy emperors like Claudius, Nero, Caligula and Tiberius, etc., not in that order.

Saw one episode. Didn't like it. Asked myself why I listen to people assuring me that such and such a TV series is awesome when I never like them. Next 'big thing' came out. Repeat cycle.

Someday I'll learn to just rip all the aerials out of the wall.

Watched some of the first one, but found it mostly irritating...much like "Rome".

Either say it's fiction, or stay closer to the history, FFS.

I finished watching the series on Netflix. I liked it. Although, there was a lot of historical inaccuracy, it was still a pretty good series.

My biggest complaint is that in the final season I think they rushed to the end, and Henry went from young, virile fellow to fat old crazyman in just a few episodes. I think they just wanted to get to his death because they knew they couldn't stretch another season. Pity.

Also, I wonder about all the philandering that went on at court. They seemed to take great risks for a fuck back that. Like when Thomas Culpeper started shagging Catherine Howard. I just don't know what went through their heads. Henry VIII - he already chopped one wife's head off, along with scores of "traitors" who were tortured and beheaded (if they were lucky) for various minor things. So, Culpeper fucks the queen? Really? I mean -- Culpeper -- I'd have to ask the fellow -- why would you fuck Henry VIII's wife? How fucking stupid can a person be?

Apparently, very stupid indeed. But stupidity is not some modern fad. You might equally ask why anyone with any sense of self-preservation would accept a position as one of the King's key advisors. The three Thomases - Wolsey , More and Cromwell - all served Henry VII well in their own ways, but they all came to grief in the end. Wolsey died before he could be tried for treason, the other two went to the chopping block. They were all highly intelligent and capable.

The Tudors could have been a very good show, as it had enough quality in the cast. But any production that resorts to sex scenes at the drop of a hat has got a big problem.
