I never suggested anyone skip the medical treatment.

Maybe the ones that are taking it easy are less noticeable?Coito ergo sum wrote:I've seen some people beat cancer by pushing themselves to get back on the horse from which they fell. I've never seen anyone beat cancer by taking it easy.

Thanks for the link Ronja. If you are even slightly a fan of Hitchens read the article. My admiration for him grows and grows.Ronja wrote:Based on this article he wrote shortly after loosing his voice, I doubt that he is being pushed as much as pulled by the likely last possibilities to relish in using his voice. Hitch has never struck me as a pushover, to put it mildly... http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/featu ... ths-201106Crumple wrote:My dad had a couple of these 'miracle comebacks' before he died from cancer. A combination of painkillers and the quest for normalcy...then wham! each relapse worse than the last until. With Hitchens, it's sad that people want to the push the guy back into the public eye, he shouldn't have that kind of pressure now.
Excerpt:To a great degree, in public and private, I “was” my voice. All the rituals and etiquette of conversation, from clearing the throat in preparation for the telling of an extremely long and taxing joke to (in younger days) trying to make my proposals more persuasive as I sank the tone by a strategic octave of shame, were innate and essential to me. I have never been able to sing, but I could once recite poetry and quote prose and was sometimes even asked to do so. And timing is everything: the exquisite moment when one can break in and cap a story, or turn a line for a laugh, or ridicule an opponent. I lived for moments like that.

Perhaps. I made no statement of general applicability. I have friends who survived different cancers, and those that have tended to try to keep on with their chosen careers and hobbies, and even sports. We had a guy going through kemo and radiation play on our football team. On many days, he couldn't do much, but out of loyalty we let him participate to whatever extent he wanted. He went to work throughout the treatments, and just tried not to let it beat him. To this day he is an inspiration to me, and I have no idea whether I could be that strong. However, if faced with a similar situation, I know he and his bravery and strength will be in my mind, and I hope to emulate it.Psychoserenity wrote:Maybe the ones that are taking it easy are less noticeable?Coito ergo sum wrote:I've seen some people beat cancer by pushing themselves to get back on the horse from which they fell. Re: Hitchens Moves Closer To Death
Bravery doesn't come into it for me. If I had only months to live I wouldn't waste them 'putting on a brave face' turning up to each & every social event, working or anything like that. I'm not particularly social now - in that kind of light I would take great delight in shuning human company at every available opportunity. Let the world go to hell is my motto, now. It wouldn't improve with cancer.Coito ergo sum wrote:Perhaps. I made no statement of general applicability. Re: Hitchens Moves Closer To Death
I have 'survived' cancer and personally I hate the whole thing about 'bravery', 'fighting' and all of that. It is a fucking nightmare and you know you are at the mercy of chance and the 'odds' involved. You can keep busy and try to distract yourself but at the end of the day the thing is out of your hands and you are at the mercy of a fucking horrible disease. That's what it is - and a third of us will die from it. You can't 'fight' it. You can do your best to cope with it is all..in my view.Coito ergo sum wrote:Perhaps. I wasn't referring to putting on any kind of face. I was referring to trying as hard as one can to press on and live life. If, to you, that means letting the world go to hell and shunning human company, then I say do it!

I never said it could. You're missing it.
Cancer patients benefit from exercise, and trying to maintain as normal a routine as possible, maintain a positive outlook, etc., all can help the quality of life during recovery and even help in recovery. Certainly cancer patients who are weak and moribund die easier than those that are fit and in fighting spirit.
That, of course, is nothing like saying such things "cure" cancer.

Sounds like voodoo thinking to me. I'm not saying it is, just sounds like your spouting voodoo. Think your way, exercise your way, fight your way out of cancer. Sounds like voodoo. It just does.Coito ergo sum wrote:I never said it could. You're missing it.
