Conditional to the fact that horoscopes prevent someone who one wants to marry from being accepted for marriage. If people use horoscopes and it doesn't cause conflict insofar bride/groom choice is concerned it is rendered a bit irrelevant, don't you think?punter18 wrote:I agree. But considering that horoscopes are a staple of most arranged marriages, how could you not find the idea of them being abhorrent anyway? I mean, after all, horoscopes, or match-making, and eventually the whole institution of arranged marriage pose an impediment, don't you think?GenesForLife wrote:More views...
I do not find the concept of arranged marriage per se abhorrent, however, I feel that any case of arranged marriage that involves the imposition of a decision upon the person getting married or the use of wibble (such as horoscopes) to try and limit one's choices is worthy of being deemed repulsive. If the custom of arranged marriage prevents people from being with whoever they want to be with, screw it I say.

I think you have to ask yourself what the point of marriage is. Different purposes of marriage will offer different reasons for why compulsory marriage might have benefits.

In that case, arranged marriages are probably ideal. Parents can spot a different bloodline from a mile away. I think perpetuating my genes is not my individual highest priority. And I advance that position to allow other people the right to choose the perpetuation or lack thereof in accordance to their own priorities.

Re: A case for arranged marriage
Be warned, though. A variety of frivolous reasons and doctrines may end up restricting the choice of bride and groom. Take caste, for instance. There is actually a caste in India called the Vaisyas who have to be administered a different hospital anaesthetic because they cannot break it down like other people do.camoguard wrote:In that case, arranged marriages are probably ideal. I disagree... I suspect I'd be significantly happier if my family had arranged a marriage for me, since relationships, short or long term are not something I comes easy to me, and both cases where things got serious (well, one, I was the one thinking they were serious) ended up in life wrecking disaster.Tigger wrote:Initially I thought you were in the "pro" group. Re: A case for arranged marriage
To be even more pedantic, forced marriage are a different class than arranged marriages altogether, though there can be overlap of marriages that are both. (for instance, the traditional kidnapping marriage of central Asia involves little arrangement in the basic form where the groom actually kidnaps a girl to get a wife, whom he may never have seen prior the day of the kidnapping)GenesForLife wrote:Pedantically speaking, Punter, forced marriages are a subclass of arranged marriages, and those where the two don't meet may be a subclass of forced marriages.punter18 wrote:Is this your caricatured view of arranged marriages?Deersbee wrote:At least these two have some say in the matter, they did not meet for the first time at the wedding.
So it is not completely caricatured as a view.

Re: A case for arranged marriage
Simple, inbreeding has fixed a mutation that leads to the deficiency of an enzyme that breaks down a certain class of anaesthetic. Since these people cannot clear that class of anaesthetic from their body it lasts longer and can be lethal. Now this deficiency occurs at a frequency that is 4000 times that seen in European/American populations. (See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16788378)Svartalf wrote:will you explain me by what marvel that happens?GenesForLife wrote:Be warned, though. People who marry within the caste (and arranged marriages are often within the caste) have more chance of picking up two mutant copies, which fucks up the phenotype.

Re: A case for arranged marriage
OK... I hadn't's thought of inbreeding as Vaisyas are such a large group.
