You're missing my point entirely. It wasn't about whether the scumbag deserved what he got. It's about authorities abusing their powers.
These are the people supposed to be looking after us. If we can't trust them then who?

Yes, but while the incident really happened, that last bit about the Marines beating the shit out of him was a fiction. A pretty obvious fiction. And even if it wasn't, that doesn't mean we can't laugh at the inherent humor of the situation, and the way the article was written.

But those letters are not silent.

They are looking out for us by beating the shit out of the scumbag.
Anyway, you're taking things far too seriously. The article as written, hoax or not, was funny. And it's impossible not to feel like the scumbag got what he deserved, abuse of power or no, in this frustratingly litigious era of let-the-criminal-go-and-do-nothing-lest-he-sue-you.

No. The authorities are supposed to look out for us by arresting people and taking them through the proper channels.
Seriously - I don't get the Rambo attitude of America at all.

I just thought the article was funny because of the way it was written. It was easy to laugh at, too, it because it seemed like an obvious fiction. Even if it were real, all of it were real, I think I'd still laugh at it because it's just a story to me, a funny story. That doesn't mean I really want Marines to act like that, or especially police to cover things up like that. It's just a funny story, and one that appeals to my sense of justice.
The Rambo attitude...I guess I'm going to contradict myself, because the Rambo films are unambiguously fiction. And yet I find them deeply disturbing, and they offend my sensibilities. But I suppose the Rambo attitude, in general terms that you're referring to, come from...anger? Frustration? The root of that anger and frustration that we apparently have as a society...I don't know. I'm not a sociologist. That's an interesting theme to explore

Assuming this was real (which it apparently wasn't)...
You and your friends are going about your business, when some dickhead comes out of nowhere and stabs one of your mates.
What would you (and your other mates) do?

We don't know the precise order of events. A court marshal would be required in my opinion if they used excessive means to disarm this guy. It is the kind of behaviour that can lead to warcrimes in a military situation involving civilians.

We don't use excessive force. We don't break several bones just because we can. If our friend is badly injured we help him and let the assailant go. If not then perhaps two of us could restrain him while the last renders first aid.
How many bones would you break if someone knocks your drink over in a club? How about if someone steals your park?
Ignore me, I'm just here for the Mafia.

Knocking a drink over compared to a stabbing... Great analogy.
I don't own a park, so I have no idea, but I don't think they'd be able to make much of a getaway.

Abusing which powers? The powers to stop a thief? And the marines didn't have any more powers than a common citizen anyway, due to posse commitatus.

I'm not talking about the marines. I'm talking about the cops who, if the story is to be believed, turned a blind eye.

It doesn't take pushing off a kerb grievous bodily harm to stop a thief.

It's more fun that way.

The GBH aspect and cover up is a hypothetical scenario.
