Reading half books.

Post by Animavore » Thu May 12, 2011 6:48 pm

Is anyone else here guilty of it?

I'm reading Virolution by Frank Ryan again as I realised I had only read half of it then forgot it as I started reading other stuff. I went through my shelf and found a whole pile I done the same with.

Earth - Richard Fortey
Collapse - Jared Diamond
Why Does E = MC[sup]2[/sup] - Brian Cox and some other guy.
Supersense - Brian Hood
China; A History - John Keats
The Elegant Universe - Brian Greene
Human, All Too Human - Nietzsche
Being and Nothingness - Sarte

Some others...

Right. That's it. No more buying books every week if I'm not going to be reading them all. I'm going to knuckle down and read all these ones I have first.

Oooh but the books always look so tempting with their slick covers and rigid binding. And the smell - mmmmm.

I need help. Tell me I'm not alone...

I try not to do this because I end up frustrated with myself for wasting time - if I'm going to give up on a book I'd prefer to do it earlier on, otherwise I feel obligated to see the horrible thing through to its dull and unsatisfying conclusion.

I always tend to finish mine.

The only time I don't finish them is if they're boring but I usually figure that out early on.

I never bought a half-book. Are they any good?

Don't get me wrong, boring books are ditched really quickly for me, too. I just have a habit of buying more books and forgetting about some of them.

I'm betting you put them down somewhere and forget about them, then go looking for something to read from the "new" pile. The previous book is not in plain sight, so it doesn't figure into your "watch shall I read" mode.

I don't forget them but I can often have 3 or 4 on the go at the same time
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

You are not alone, Ani. Booooks...... I have far too many now and it's never hard to find more. However, my Nook has helped but down on the amount of money and space I spend on books - my Nook is full of fiction and I buy physical copies of the nonfiction books. Although, like you, Ani, I have a habit of buying more books and forgetting about some of them.

There is plenty for you to read in the mafia thread too ;)
