Australia's not perfect but I prefer living here to the idea of living in any of the political, humanitarian and economic shitholes around the globe. There are many other places equal or better where I might happily live, though. I don't know if wanting to defend, maintain and improve the society in which I live and raise a family, and therefore have a greater level of interest, is patriotism, but if that's what it is, I think it's better than apathy.

Patriotism is inherently divisive in regard to the human race, and it leads to bellicosity. It is the prime tool for leaders of any nation to gather cannon fodder in order to advance their interests.
- Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. ...Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country. - Hermann Göring

Only time i get all flag wavy is when Australia national sporting teams are playing or individual Australians are representing us on the world stage in their chosen field then all philosophy aside GO AUSTRALIA!

As if freedom was a question of might as if loyalty was black and white
You hear people say all the time--"My country wrong or right"
I want to know what that's got to do With what it takes to find out what's true
With everyone from the President on down Trying to keep it from you
The thing I wonder about the Dads and Moms
Who send their sons to the Vietnams
Will they really think their way of life Has been protected as the next war comes?

I describe myself as ironically patriotic.

I am not, but I would like Italy if it was a civil State. I can say objectively it is the better State in some fields (as anyone else), and I like this fields.
As always "unfortunately there is Italians".
