That should get them going? Another smart bomb? :smoke:

A Nato air strike in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, has killed the son of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, a government spokesman has said.

Colonel Gaddafi himself was in the large residential villa which was hit by the strike, the spokesman added, but was unharmed.

His son Saif al-Arab was said to be dead, as well as three grandchildren.

Nato has confirmed the air strike, without denying or confirming the reported deaths.

A Nato spokesman said the strike had hit a "known command-and-control building in the Bab al-Aziziya neighbourhood".

"All Nato's targets are military in nature... We do not target individuals," said Lieutenant-General Charles Bouchard.

He said that he was aware of reports that members of Col Gaddafi's family had been killed, but made no further comment.

"We regret all loss of life, especially the innocent civilians being harmed as a result of the ongoing conflict," said Lt-Gen Bouchard.

Kids? You must be kidding.

Muhammad (b. 1970)
Saif al-Islam (b. 1972)
Al-Saadi (b. 1973)
Hannibal (b. 1976)
Moatessem-Billal (b. 1977)
Saif al-Arab (b. 1982)
Khamis (1983)
Ayesha (b. 1976)
Hanna (adopted, d.1986)

If any of them died in course of the current upheaval, it would most likely be on account of Gaddafi's nepotism, and it is quite likely that they were very much enjoying the positions of power their dad bestowed upon them while they could.

Ironically,
A plan to use mercenaries to restore the monarchy was organised by David Stirling, founder of the British Special Air Service, who had been approached by a member of the royal family. The plan—dubbed "Hilton Assignment" in an ironic reference to Libyan jails—was to spring 150 political prisoners from Tripoli jail as a catalyst for a general uprising; the mercenaries were to slip away quietly as the locals took over. Despite Stirling's confidence, the plan was called off at a late stage by the British Secret Intelligence Service, allegedly because the United States Government felt that Gaddafi was sufficiently anti-Marxist and thus acceptable.

Relatives kids whatever. The main thing is they struck a residential area where kids would have been. If they bury them in the next twenty four hours and the incident turns out to be real I fail to see how this bungled attempt to kill Gaddafi himself helps matters. They need ground assasins with specific targets to seperate the head from the body of the regime. :smoke:

How old were the three grandchildren?

Yep. Once you go down a violent/military path you can't predict the outcome - people get killed and weapons don't discriminate. I think they are targeting Gaddafi and his family because the expected quick win of the rebels is turning into a stalemate and they are terrified of getting NATO stuck there for years as in Afghanistan.

I think these tribal cultures have mostly intact extended families so they may be making a mistake transferring a Western model of fragmented society onto something more resembling inbred hill-billies. That's a seriously bad mistake to make in the circumstances. :smoke:

Is there a safe moral course of action ? All his children are complicit ,but are his grand children ? Collateral damage how much is acceptable ?
