All being equal atheism should be more popular than religion. There's no silly rituals, it is a pragmatic, those who are atheists often have technical knowledge and a interest in scientific progress that means they are apt to be wealthier, or lead interesting lives. Yet so few. I suggest something is killing the atheists? Perhaps religious folk are killing the atheists?

Why do Americans still dislike atheists?

Long after blacks and Jews have made great strides, and even as homosexuals gain respect, acceptance and new rights, there is still a group that lots of Americans just don’t like much: atheists. Those who don’t believe in God are widely considered to be immoral, wicked and angry. They can’t join the Boy Scouts. Atheist soldiers are rated potentially deficient when they do not score as sufficiently “spiritual” in military psychological evaluations. Surveys find that most Americans refuse or are reluctant to marry or vote for nontheists; in other words, nonbelievers are one minority still commonly denied in practical terms the right to assume office despite the constitutional ban on religious tests.

There are 1. 6 million athiests in America who are open. But the real figure may be as high as 60 million. Only being a communist is more despised. And there aren't probably too many of them. If the United States wasn't a right -wing Christian nation, then more atheists would be open about their lack of belief. Some are even afraid to come out to their own families. Some may fear losing their job. When you have a family to feed and bills to pay, you are not going to jeopardise your career by making yourself unpopular with your employer. It is alright for us. We live in liberal Europe where having no belief is not remotely remarkable. Conservative North America is however totally different. It will get better over time, but it isn't going to happen as quickly as we and others would wish it. We must learn to be patient.

It's because most Atheists have not realised that a better argument / explanation is not enough to defeat religion.

Religion needs to be replaced in practice (as well defeated in the debating chamber) - perhaps hard for some Atheists to accept, but Religions do serve (some) practical purposes - several thousands years of pragmatism will do that. The most powerful weapon in the Atheist Arsenal (snigger) is the Rule of Law - but only if deployed and sold correctly (it's what seperates the civilised from Monkeys and Cavemen).

So, what's killing all the Atheists? Atheists are.
