Would you describe yourself as patriotic?

Post by Rum » Fri Apr 29, 2011 8:41 pm

Seems to me that thinking your country is the best is a little like thinking your god is the best! Are you patriotic? If so how do you justify it?

It's a piece of piss to be cowiz, but it's not cowiz to be a piece of piss. Or something like that.

No, i hold myself as more responsible to the world as a whole than my country. I actually feel that the feeling of patriotism is a step away from nationalism which in turn inevitably turns to a form a bigotry through a us versus them mentality.
I can live with doubt, and uncertainty, and not knowing. I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong. [...] I don’t feel frightened by not knowing things, by being lost in a mysterious universe without having any purpose, which is the way it really is, as far as I can tell, possibly. It doesn’t frighten me. - Richard Feynman

I would like to be. But I am British - so nothing worth fighting for. nor worth contributing to. Patriotism would be a waste of time.

The good news is that I am not dependent on being in Britain for my wealth or my comfort, so (for me) it doesn't matter.

Extremely fine-scale ancestry inference will determine who belongs where in this country. Then you can all go back to whatever county you came from.

A little bit. Which is to say that, for all its faults (both temporary and historic), I very much like living in this country. Otherwise, my sentiments are pretty close to Rob's.

I have a contract with the country I live in, it has requirements of me and I have expectations of it. I consider it to be quite a beneficial contract for me but thats as far as it goes.

Nope, no never, not since I left behind a lot of childish illusions... and that was back when I left childhood for adolescence.
my country is a place where people are crushed, education is not what it used to be, and going down, oportunities to get that education are as minuscule as those to get interesting or lucrative job. You have to feel lucky when you're stuck in a sould crushing slavery that does not pay enough to live decently.

The gummint is made op of the stupid and the corrupt, and seem busy tearing down the place uner pretence of modernizing it. the authorities are a caste unto themselves with no links with, answerability to, or respect for or from the common people...

This place is ready for a revolution and/or a civil war...

I don't think my country is best, it just happens to be the one I like the best. I lost body parts for it.
