Islam just younger than the others and being really fucking badly behaved at the moment .At one point they were the outlooking/science friendly ones
that us "Christian" dark age morons had a few crusades against ,thats when we got bored of having popogroms against jews.
Humans we suck , It takes a faith to make good people do evil things .or a good load of propaganda .
This is the biggest bunch of unthinking propaganda ever hurled upon a board. Those "free thinkers" were apostates. Look up Ibn al-Rawandi on wiki. It took a heretic to do any philosophy. The Abbasid Khalifa, Harun al-Rashid, initiated an inquisition known as the Mihna. What took place was a debate between the fundamentalists (Ashariyya) and more rational (Mu'atazila) strands of Islam at the time. The former saying the Qur'an was the uncreated word of god, the latter that it was created. Every single philosopher I can think of at the period was of the latter group. The latter were trounced in the debate, because the full weight of Islamic canon stands with the fundamentalist. This is how Islam destroyed notions of Mantiq (Aristotalean rationalism) and decent conduct. ***EDIT: The Mu'atizla were declared apostates. Not to worry the very short period of pseudo enlightenment was destroyed post haste by the texts of Islam.
All this learning existed precisely because Christians brought philosophy to Islam. It was two Arab Christians, Hunayn Ibn Ishaq, and Ishaq Ibn Hunayn, who translated the great works from Greek to Arabic. And there was little philosophical improvement made, it was mostly a rehashing of notions of "celestial" bodies and their role as an analogy to divine revelation. Please see "The Islamic Concept of Knowledge".
I simply cannot imagine why you would say "Islam is just younger" to explain away the fundamental nature of the faith. That makes no sense, especially in light of the fact that you credit them with all this remarkable science (a propaganda effort on par with the Protocols of the Elders of Zion) in the past. It makes no sense. Generally when one criticizes an inexperienced teenager they don't say, "but he was a Noble Laureate at age 10". The sooner you figure out that Islam is the way it is because of the specific canonical texts which it is based upon the sooner we can get around to solutions. As long as people like you make excuses, apologize for, and pretend Islam was some great entity, we are in big trouble.
Now I realize that it is an indispensable tenet of liberalism to make comments like this:
"Us" Christians? Are you a Christian? Did you live in the Dark Ages? You bear no responsibility for that the same way Osama Bin Laden shares no responsibility for the philosophy of Imam al-Ghazali. Now when you are ready to discontinue the self flagellation, I think this discussion can continue, but I highly doubt we will get anywhere when you feel you must forward your liberal bona fides by declaring yourself responsible for the Council of Clermont in the 11th Century.that us "Christian" dark age morons had a few crusades against ,thats when we got bored of having popogroms against jews
