Arguing with a fundie - resource needed

Post by cowiz » Wed Apr 27, 2011 2:02 pm

I made the claim, from memory that the early Christians debated over the divinity of Jebus - i.e. not all agreed that he was the son of the big fella in the sky. This was something I had recalled from the back of my mind, and I vaguely remember watching a documentary about it.

And fairly the fucker has asked me to support my claim :lay:

Google returns mostly apologetics sites and a couple of Wiki articles which do not help.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this subject and point me to references that will show I was not talking out of my ass (which of course I was).

Thanks

Thomas doubted the divinity of Jesus.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

True. But I am looking for some historical support that the early Xian movement debated the divinity issue.

They debated whether he was a man, a god or a bit of both. It was a huge thing in the early church and had an effect on which books were included in the Bible and which weren't. There was a C4 or BBC documentary about it a couple of years ago, but I forget what it was called.
