Oil Price to Choke Global Recovery?

You want proof. It's coming. There's not long before TSHTF big time. Don't worry about that.

The sterling price of Brent crude hit an all-time high yesterday, sparking new fears for the UK’s prospects of economic recovery and offering the consumer little prospect of lower petrol prices in the near future.

The price of Brent crude rose to a high of $120.63 yesterday, the highest since August 2008. However, the pound's 17 per cent fall against the dollar over the past two years has pushed the sterling price per barrel to a record £74.60.

The immediate cause of yesterday's rise was a strike in the West African oil-producing state of Gabon. This compounded fears over the loss of oil exports from Libya, Africa's third largest oil producer, as civil war rages in the country. Events there have forced Saudi Arabia to boost its supply.

Since the start of the year Brent crude prices have soared from below $100 per barrel, as unrest has spread across North Africa and the Middle East.

Meanwhile, fears of rocketing oil prices were stoked today when Sheikh Yamani, for more than two decades Saudi Arabia's oil minister, told Reuters that serious unrest in his homeland could push oil prices as high as $300 a barrel.

Man these times are hard.

We need an alternative more than fast! Just where is it and will the whole political mess caused by resources ever end?

A Manhattan Project for nuclear power. Now.

Fund fusion research to the hilt, and start building modern fission reactors in the meantime (but not on fault lines).

All electric cars and cheap electricity - that's what we need.

Everything like that takes time. The changeover from oil should have started in 1980 for a smooth transition. This is gonna be a hard landing as we break way from the carbon age now. The survivors will rebuild although it may take a thousand years of dark age stupidity first. Blame it on religion....our descendants will learn the lesson.

The actual price for extracting oil is a small part of what we pay at the pump anyway in the UK. If the price of a barrel of oil doubled tomorrow wouldnt that be just a 10% increase in pump prices?

Everything takes time. The "it takes time" mantra is the cry of the naysayer and the cynic. Twenty years is not a long time. We ought to be building nuclear plants, coal plants, wind farms and tidal generators by the boatload, and keeping the supply of electricity high. As we open new sources of electricity and depress the price, the attractiveness of electrical devices including electric cars will skyrocket.

The problem with electric cars, well, one of the problems, is that the price of electricity will rise as demand rises. So, put 10 to 50 million electric vehicles on the road, and the electric bills will go through the roof. Like Captain Kirk said to Scotty, "we need more power."

The rising oil price is actually a small worry compared with the thing it signifies which is a impending collapse in the actual supply chain itself. You need to consider the price a 'human panic indicator' in this instance? :coffee:

I'm going to stick with the Anglo-Saxons. I look most like them, and when it all comes crashing down, who gets shot by whom is going to largely depend on who looks more like whom (as has been the case for most of human history).

Are you suggesting that some "cultures" are not quite as multicultural as claimed?

Anglo-Saxons? Pah :hehe: Those of us from Norman stock kicked your butts in 1066. quite happy to do it all again :td:

Normans are basically the same thing. In 1066 they were three generations removed from being Danish. And, the Saxons came from that area too.

Scandinavian, German, Anglo-Saxon, Norman - it's all the same shit upside down.
