I'd love to be able to go to a gun range and fire rounds every week. And I don't mean the shitty ones like in Ireland where you can go clay pigeon shooting with rifles. I mean like the ones in Prague where I was able to fire all manner of handguns as well as a pump action shotgun. Unfortunately when I was there the outdoor place was closed for a summer holiday and I never got to fire any AK-47s or Tech 9s. I'm a naturally good shot. The instructor was giving me high praise at how natural I was with it while the rest of the tourists at the range where tensing up and closing their eyes. And firing a Colt .45 - fucking awesome. I would so love to take a person down with one of them given an adequate circumstance.
Probably will never happen, though.

I'm always locked and loaded, have been for 25 years or more, every single day. An unloaded gun is more useless than a panty-waist liberal nitwit Obama voter, and they are wastes of perfectly good oxygen.

I like the word "hoplophobe." Excellent etymology.
Coined by the guru of armed self defense, the late Col. Jeff Cooper. He had the coolest house in Arizona. It had a sally port at the front door. You had to walk down this concrete passage to get to the front door to ring the bell, and he could seal the other end with the push of a button, and his front door was build from AR-plate bank-vault steel about 3/4 of an inch thick with 1 inch locking bolts on all four sides, covered with a rustic wood veneer. It had a gun port in it in case visitors became obstreperous and uncooperative, but you'd never guess it was a sally port...and jail cell...unless you pissed him off.

I live in downtown Detroit. I have found that the best protection from random violent crime , ie mugging

is #1, don't hang around criminals #2, don't be an arsehole. #3 don't flash your money in the casino then walk to a lonely carpark

Most violent crime is perpetrated by those people we know, by people who live in our immediate area and people of teh same race.

So to stay safe is easy. Don't have arseholes for friends or family and don't mess around with drugs.

If you know how to stay safe you don't need a gun.

If you ever get out Colorado way, I'll be happy to provide you with all the shooting you can stand, from .17 caliber to .50 BMG, ranges from 3 yards to 2500 yards.

Col Cooper, and his instructors consider the Colt 1911 to be the finest fighting firearm ever made. I disagree somewhat because I used to own several, but they were always finicky about feeding and tended to jam easily unless kept scrupulously clean.

My favorite firearm of all time is the H&K P9S .45. Roller-locking delayed blow-back, polygonal rifling increases muzzle velocity by 15% with less fouling. Fits my hand perfectly. Had only one major flaw, which was the Eurpoean-style magazine release catch on the bottom of the grip rather than a release button on the side, under the thumb, and the mags don't drop free, so they are slightly slower during tactical mag changes. Sexy looking too.

My current concealed carry gun is the H&K USP compact .45, 8+1, and my "outback" gun, that goes on my backpacking/motorcycling rig is the H&K USP Tactical .45. 12+1, tritium adjustable sights and set up for a silencer.

Never had a jam or failure of any kind with an H&K, ever, even after firing more than 500 rounds without cleaning.

...until you do, and then you REALLY need one badly, and nothing else will do.

It's better to have a gun and never need it than to need one and not have it. And carrying concealed gives you that option, improves your situational awareness so you are less likely to walk into trouble unaware, and is a positive benefit to society where it's legal due to significant drops in violent crime everywhere concealed carry is lawful.

I would agree that these are all good ways to avoid being a victim of violent crime, and I practice all of the above. However, they are not foolproof, and having the ability to defend yourself when your best efforts aren't enough to avoid trouble sure is nice.

Oh, and you might want to add "Don't live in Detroit" to your list of ways to avoid violent crime.

Well, that's because the Capitalists pay the cops well to keep it that way and to keep the riff-raff where they belong, so in reality you're trading and benefiting off of Capitalism in the most fundamental way. You should be living in the slums of Detroit in Marxist solidarity with the oppressed working and dependent class if you don't want to appear to be a gross hypocrite, don't you think?

If individual States are to have a "state firearm", should the USA have an official national firearm and should a black outline of it be added to the Stars and Stripes?
Gee, it would look so neat.

YES
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life
