If one should encounter a gun owner who does not know the most basic information about his/her firearms, such as make, manufacturer and type of ammo, that is reason to be concerned. It is not the informed person that one should be afraid of.

They should also know the ballistic characteristics of the precise brand of ammunition they use, including the terminal ballistics performance like penetration, expansion and wound-channel, sight picture and point of aim, bullet drop at different ranges, magazine/cylinder capacity, detailed operating characteristics and law regarding the legal use of deadly force and carrying of firearms.

People who don't know all that information have no business carrying a gun.

I also stand by my observation that on the day that you are cowering on the floor of the convenience store that's being robbed by a killer who is methodically shooting everyone to eliminate witnesses that you will be pissing your pants and crying as you pray for someone, ANYONE to have a gun besides your executioner who will save you, just like the majority of the kids at Virginia Tech who lived through it, and likely the ones who died there, did.

You will die with a bullet in the back of your head and shit in your pants crying for your mommy, or more likely God.

I might die, but if I do, it'll be with a bullet in my chest, fired from in front of me, and I will have done everything in my power humanly possible to put down the killer to protect even the cowards and hoplophobes on the floor pissing themselves and shrieking in fear, even if it means ripping the throat out of the killer with my bare hands.

And here, in the politically sane states at least, policemen are glad to see law-abiding armed citizens, who on no few occasions have come to the assistance of the police. Our police, at least out west, aren't afraid of an armed citizenry, they welcome it because it makes their job easier and safer.
