My belief is that "peaceful" Muslims are anything but peaceful, and that they subscribe to all of the above violent and oppressive aspects of Islam, but choose to deliberately conceal their support for Jihad so that they can infiltrate other societies and act as fifth-column spies, saboteurs, and sleeper agents who will rise up and strike when the time is right, as the Koran, and their Imams, direct them to do.

I think they're more similar to many western Jews: they feel too much of an emotional tie to even the poorly behaved parts of their religion openly to criticize it, even though intellectually, they disapprove of some of the injustices done in their religion's name. It's understandable, but not excusable, in both cases.

I think we underestimate the desire for something more liberal, in particular in north Africa. I have read that one of the reasons that the Egypt 'revolution' was as peaceful relatively as it was, was due to the fact oat many of the senior generals were educated and trained in the west and picked up ideas to do with democracy in the process.

A military coup counts as "liberal" these days? The reason it was relatively peaceful, of course, was that the military retained the power, merely removing a figurehead and replacing it with direct rule by a military junta.

It just irks me, this "Islamic World" nonsense. We need a bigger movement of folks constantly correcting that there is no such thing as a part of this world that is inherently Islamic. There are parts of the world with lots of Muslims in it, but that doesn't make it "Islamic World" for the same reason that the US and Europe is not "Christian World." We need to stop that crap.

Me too. I'm very isolationist these days and fucking tired of paying to pull other people's fat out of the fire. They never appreciate it, and it never really does us any good either.

My preferred form of military intervention is to lob missiles and bombs from long distance, using nukes as required, to destroy all of the infrastructure of civilization in any country that attacks us or supports those who do attack us (including terrorist havens), and repeat the process whenever they stick their heads out of the caves to threaten us. No ground troops at all, just high explosives, rocket fuel, and nuclear materials for the particularly obstreperous and difficult ones.

Most especially no more "nation building." Nation destroying, absolutely. Nation building? Never. Compensation? Never. Regrets? None.
