yah...I think that is precisely what makes it a good parody, it's easy to believe since the US does invade so many countries. People see the headline and actually believe it could be true.
What people? Who believed it, besides apparently you and the OP poster?

The reason Tea Party has any traction inside the Republican Party is because the highly gullible naive foolishidealistic Neoconservatives bumped into that thing called reality.

I don't think we're going anywhere in force. Obama is having a hard enough time keeping the public interested in Afghanistan right now.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I would have said the absolute reverse as long as there is a tag somewhere that makes sure you really do know. In this case the 'about the author' bit at the end did it if you had any remaining doubts.

lol, I fell for one of these fake news stories the other day. I was embarrased, but it was a good one

That would be ok if everyone read every bit, but most people skim a bit, or don't get to the end.
To me, a parody site's one valid reason for existence is to be funny. There should be wit involved. Anyone can just post false stuff, that's just repeating the same old joke over and over. If it's not witty, it's just a pathetic irritation.

It's not "just false stuff". To me it's humour on different levels, and if you can't see that, then that's fine. Not everyone has the same sense of humour.

Nor can one ask people to put stuff together on the basis that people won't finish reading it!

Well, to me, it's exactly the same joke, if there is no new wit in there.
It may have been funny the first time, but the same joke over and over is just pathetic.
It's something anyone can do, without having any original thoughts. If that's humour on different levels, you're easily pleased.

What this boils down to is "I don't get it, it sucks."

For me it's "I get it, and you can have fun with something else if this isn't for you."

Do you think the news from The Onion is also pathetic? They do some great stuff. Sure they don't hit with every story, but it has great potential even if it's all parody on some level

Well, to me it's just a platform for a joke. The parody part may be amusing on it's own the very first time. After that, it can hardly continue being funny on it's own. I've heard it.
No reason why it can't be the framework for a genre of joke, but it needs some fresh wit after that, otherwise it's just the same joke repeated again and again.

If you kept repeating the chicken-crossing-the-road joke again and again, just changing the animal each time, it would be shite.

Speaking of chicken this went down really well down t' pub

Why did Jesus cross the road?

He was nailed to a chicken.

Ya coulda heard a pin drop,

and potential new shag was annoyed.

Americans.

And the original article, well Landmark and that Betty thing have been going a while. They really depend on religious folk keeping on doing dumber and dumber things, and surely there must be a limit below which they can't descend?

That begs the question, can dumbness bottom out?

( yeah, I know that leaves the field open for witty ripostes, so riposte away )
Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies. ~ Marx

Do you really think it is weakness that yields to temptation? I tell you that there are terrible temptations which it requires strength, strength and courage to yield to. ~ Oscar Wilde
