Maybe we should adopt them.

The Rules

* :hmph: Point of Privilege: Pertains to noise, personal comfort, etc. - may interrupt only if necessary!
* :ask: Parliamentary Inquiry: Inquire as to the correct motion - to accomplish a desired result, or raise a point of order
* :flog: Point of Information: Generally applies to information desired from the speaker: "I should like to ask the (speaker) a question."
* :yessir: Orders of the Day (Agenda): A call to adhere to the agenda (a deviation from the agenda requires Suspending the Rules)
* :mob: Point of Order: Infraction of the rules, or improper decorum in speaking. Must be raised immediately after the error is made
* :snooze: Consider by Paragraph: Adoption of paper is held until all paragraphs are debated and amended and entire paper is satisfactory; after all paragraphs are considered, the entire paper is then open to amendment, and paragraphs may be further amended. Any Preamble can not be considered until debate on the body of the paper has ceased.
* :drunk: Amend: Inserting or striking out words or paragraphs, or substituting whole paragraphs or resolutions
* :dq: Withdraw/Modify Motion: Applies only after question is stated; mover can accept an amendment without obtaining the floor
* :teef: Commit /Refer/Recommit to Committee: State the committee to receive the question or resolution; if no committee exists include size of committee desired and method of selecting the members (election or appointment).
* Extend Debate: Applies only to the immediately pending question; extends until a certain time or for a certain period of time
* :coffee: Limit Debate: Closing debate at a certain time, or limiting to a certain period of time
* :airwank: Postpone to a Certain Time: State the time the motion or agenda item will be resumed
* ;ob; Object to Consideration: Objection must be stated before discussion or another motion is stated
* :naughty: Lay on the Table: Temporarily suspends further consideration/action on pending question; may be made after motion to close debate has carried or is pending
* :shifty: Take from the Table: Resumes consideration of item previously "laid on the table" - state the motion to take from the table
* :ele: Reconsider: Can be made only by one on the prevailing side who has changed position or view
* :levi: Postpone Indefinitely: Kills the question/resolution for this session - exception: the motion to reconsider can be made this session
* :eddy: Informal Consideration: Move that the assembly go into "Committee of the Whole" - informal debate as if in committee; this committee may limit number or length of speeches or close debate by other means by a 2/3 vote. All votes, however, are formal.
* :begging: Appeal Decision of the Chair: Appeal for the assembly to decide - must be made before other business is resumed; NOT debatable if relates to decorum, violation of rules or order of business
* Suspend the Rules: Allows a violation of the assembly's own rules (except Constitution); the object of the suspension must be specified :panic:

Sorry guys, I did that back in my drinking days after a couple fifths of Everclear, when I was trying to get the guys in my head to be a little more manageable and stop talking over each other. They were never actually meant for use on real people.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Actually, we don't ban as a punitive measure. The philosophy is that accounts are suspended to give people a chance to cool off and consider things a while, maybe get out and look at birds and trees or something.

I found this alarming at first. But in the context of Ratz culture, it works quite well I think, especially in conjunction with the Play Nice guideline.
It's incredibly patronising and presumptuous. :leave:
Yep that's the best thing about it the chance to patronise people . When someone thinks they go out in a blaze of glory and they get told they can't post for 24hrs :laff:

What's up with the "you're not authorized to edit a sig" deal?
No clue, let me check.
You should know this, you admin type. It's to cull the spammers who join up, put an ad in their sig, and post a few babble posts just to get the sig on display.

If you post a bit you get to choose a sig
You're right, I'd forgotten that, until you post once there is some stuff not available.

Common sense seems to be working pretty well.
There is no such thing as "common" sense. If there were we wouldn't need traffic laws. :cranky:

There's "good sense", which is quite rare.
Strangely, in a small town in England somewhere I think, they did an experiment and removed all the traffic advisory, warning and control signs and markings...everything...and the number of accidents declined, as did the average speed through town.

Oh dear Feck. Let's leave that to the politics forum. I just waded through a metric shit ton of refuse over at RS in the gun control thread. ;-;

If you were in the Seattle area I would over you a drink but in spirit anyway: :td:

Welcome.

Welcome.
Thanks! Love Seattle. I spent a month in a hotel room in Lynnwood some years ago hallucinating that my pillows were giant slugs and floating through the wall into the next room in my bed. Too much hydrocodone. Very odd, because I was bedridden with a back injury at the time, and when I went on my extracorporeal visit, I saw an old man, an old lady and a small dog in the room. Next day, I asked the friend who was caring for me who was in the room next door, and she said an old man, and old lady, and a small dog.

Now THAT freaked me out, which is when I gave in and had the steroid injections in my spine and got the hell out of there.

Magic out of body experiences eh? Nothing to do with possibly hearing an old couple and a dog while off your face then?
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

No, I used to remember what they, particularly the dog, looked like. I described their appearance and their clothing to my caretaker, who confirmed it and was freaked out too. As I recall, it was a white scottie or yorkie. Long time ago now, and the memories dim.

Freaked me the hell out, I can tell you. I can see why hallucinations make people crazy, or something.
