Pope says sex education an 'attack on religious freedom'

Sexual and civic education in schools in Europe is an "attack" on religious freedom, Pope Benedict XVI said on Monday in a traditional annual address to foreign diplomats to the Vatican.

"I cannot remain silent about another attack on the religious freedom of families in certain European countries which mandate obligatory participation in courses of sexual or civic education," the Pope told the ambassadors.

He said such courses "convey a neutral concept of the person and of life, yet in fact reflect an anthropology opposed to faith and to right reason".

The Pope said this was an example of the "threats" against "the cultural roots which nourish the profound identity and social cohesion of many nations".

In a collection of interviews published in November 2010, Pope Benedict said for the first time that he approved of condom use to reduce the risk of disease, leading some to wonder whether his attitude to sex education was changing.

But the Vatican later insisted that the Pope's comments referred only to sex workers who were HIV positive and could not be applied more widely.

I just read the pope's entire speech, and have come to the following conclusion:

Ratzinger is a cunning underminer of religious institutions, and a daring one too, for he comes out quite openly with proposals that many secularists would not dare entertain, let alone say out loud. Look at these two, for example:

He calls for the abrogation of the blasphemy law. Well, only Pakistan's at this stage, but it's a start, isn't it?
Among the norms prejudicing the right of persons to religious freedom, particular mention must be made of the law against blasphemy in Pakistan: I once more encourage the leaders of that country to take the necessary steps to abrogate that law
He concludes his speech thus:
I would repeat that the Church seeks no privileges, nor does she seek to intervene in areas unrelated to her mission
That means we can expect the Catholic Church to relinquish its tax-free status all over the world, and that it will henceforth make no attempts to interfere with "obligatory participation in courses of sexual or civic education".

And they say he is a reactionary! :nono:

Mayhap he learned the art of "tell a lie enough times and everyone will believe you" from George Bush Jnr.

I think his objection is that sex education, if done properly, would include a module on how to spot, avoid, and report sexual predators. That would be a disaster for the Church.

Don;t educate the kids about sex. If they knew it was "sex" when you are fiddling with them then you can't make any clever excuses.

I try not to be judgmental and leap to negative conclusions, but I have to say this guy has always seemed like a cowardly prig to me.

You know when the Italians legalized abortion they put in a very aggressive program of sex education and social support for unwed mothers. The church fought it tooth and nail, but it worked. The abortion rate in Italy is now more in line with other enlightened European countries, much lower than the rate in the US, and much much lower than the rate in the Catholic countries of South America.
